Moatize is a small town in Mozambique in the province of Tete . Moatize has spacious squares and some FRELIMO monuments .

geography

The city is located in the Moatize district , just a few kilometers from the city of Tete on the opposite, left bank of the Zambezi at the mouth of the Revuboe River .

population

Moatize had a population of around 30,000 in 2006. Due to the expansion of the mine, there has been a strong influx since 2008. The new quarter "25 de Setembro." Was built for those who were forcibly resettled because of the opencast mine.

economy

It is estimated that Moatize has the largest hard coal deposits in Africa with billions of tons . Since the switch to opencast mining in 2011, there have been massive environmental problems due to dust and drinking water poisoning. In order to promote mining, the Moatize- Sena railway line , which leads to the port of Beira , and the road are to be completely renewed. A railway line to Nkaya in Malawi with a connection to the Mozambican port in Nacala is also to be built, which will take up three quarters of the coal transported. The main foreign investor is the Mitsui Group from Japan .

history

The GDR maintained close relations with the People's Republic of Mozambique, whose liberation front FRELIMO had received military support even before independence from the GDR. From 1977 the establishment of a broad economic cooperation was sought. The hard coal mining of Moatize, which is the heart of the Tete coal mining area , was nationalized the following year after a GDR relief operation following mine accidents in 1977, the production was to be divided equally between the GDR and Mozambique.

The GDR had secured possible coal imports of around 250,000 t annually, but did not notice serious quality problems with coking until early 1979 . Since the international creditworthiness of the Mozambican government depended on the progress of production in Moatize, this result was catastrophic for both sides. At that time Moatize was the only larger colony of GDR citizens abroad; the East German employees were, however, rigidly sealed off. At the beginning of the 80s, relations with Mozambique cooled down a bit and after 1984 they were really settled, including the GDR presence in Moatize.

education

There are two primary schools and one secondary school in Moatize. There is a school for mining technology and rock science that goes back to the foreign policy cooperation with the GDR.
