Mwanza is a 1200 meter high border town in Malawi with 18,039 inhabitants (as of 2018). It is located on the important road from Blantyre to Tete am Zambezi in Mozambique and is the capital of the district of the same name Mwanza with an area of 2259 km² and a population of 138,015. The road with a single-lane bridge over the Shire to the Mpatamanga Gorge has now been very well developed with funds from the European Union. It runs as a trunk road towards South Africa . 70% of international road transport for Malawi is handled in Mwanza.

Mwanza is only important as a customs post. Opposite the border is Zobue in Mozambique. The Mwanza district is a mountainous and agriculturally difficult region, even if the soils are relatively fertile. Nevertheless, Mwanza is one of the poorest districts in Malawi. Diet, literacy rate and income are well below the national average. The World Food Program founded the Muyende Bwino Pit Stop to fight prostitution in the border town.

Vegetable growing and honey extraction are important in agriculture.

Mwanza has a 1,000-meter-long runway, primary and secondary schools and a hospital that primarily treats Mozambicans who are otherwise without any medical care.
