Transnet Freight Rail ( TFR ) is the division for freight rail transport within the state transport company Transnet of South Africa . To a small extent, it provides services for external and own passenger transport capacities. This division emerged from the Spoornet business division responsible for freight transport .
description
Structure and tasks of Transnet Freight Rail
The main tasks of the most important Transnet business area are the transport of goods in the South African rail network. The responsibilities in passenger transport appear comparatively marginal. The main areas of activity of Freight Rail are :
- GFB Commercial,
- COALlink , coal transports from inland to the port of Richards Bay on the east coast of South Africa,
- Orex line , iron ore shipments from Sishen and some branch lines to the port of Saldanha as well
- the Blue Train and Shosholoza Meyl passenger transport areas .
Large goods distribution centers such as the City Deep Container Terminal in Johannesburg or the Sentrarand marshalling yard are operated by Transnet Freight Rail .
Within the company division for passenger transport, Transnet Freight Rail mainly only provides technical services, such as the provision of track systems, railway stations in third-party networks and support services for train control systems. Metrorail , Shosholoza Meyl and Luxrail , which are combined in the Commuter Rail Services division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), benefit from this . A transfer of the Blue Train from Transnet to PRASA is being negotiated between the two partners.
Connections abroad
The South African rail network connects to several foreign rail networks in neighboring states. There are transitions in this regard:
- at Ressano Garcia to the network of the Mozambican railway CFM ,
- at eGolela and south of Komatipoort to the Eswatini Railways network in Swaziland ,
- near Musina / Beitbridge to the network of the National Railways of Zimbabwe ,
- at Ottoshoop to the railroad to Gaborone and Francistown in Botswana and to Plumtree in Zimbabwe
- and west of Upington to the network of the Namibian railway company TransNamib .
There is also a line operated by Transnet Freight Rail to Maseru in Lesotho .
The Transnet Freight Rail network is connected by the railways of neighboring countries to:
- the Zambia Railways in Zambia ,
- the TAZARA , the southern network of Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo ,
- the rail network in Malawi ,
- the Benguela Railway in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo ,
- as well as with Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique -Central and -North of Mozambique.
history
The beginnings of the railroad in South Africa go back to 1853 when the Cape Town Railway & Dock Company was founded. A railway line was planned from the ports on the Cape of Good Hope to Natal . The real trigger for the construction of the railway was the discovery of diamonds in Kimberley in 1867.
There were several independent railway companies in South Africa, which after the founding of the South African Union in 1910 all merged into the newly founded state railway company South African Railways and Harbors (SAR & H) / Suid -Afrikaanse Spoorweë en Hawens (SASH) were incorporated and thus lost their independence. In the 1980s, SAR & H / SASH became the newly conceived state-owned company SATS (South African Transport Services) , between 1990 and 2007 Spoornet and finally Transnet Freight Rail .
Current projects
- Maputo Corridor : Transnet Freight Rail is working with the US Railroad Development Corporation to develop a plan to transport magnetite from the mining area around Phalaborwa for a project-stage steelworks in Maputo .
- In May 2010, Transnet published a five-year plan for all rail projects amounting to 52 billion rand . Most of the budget is to be invested in new rolling stock , including 304 locomotives and 7231 wagons of various types. 4 billion alone are to be used to improve the transport infrastructure , such as the connection of the Majuba coal-fired power station (between Standerton and Volksrust ) with the Richards Bay freight railway ( COALlink for short ) are spent.
- In 2012, bilateral planning work began on the Swazilink route project .
