Shosholoza Meyl
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa operates long-distance trains in South Africa under the name Shosholoza Meyl . Shosholoza Meyl was part of Spoornet until 2009 . The trains run on Cape Gauge . SAR classes 6E1 and 7E are used as train locomotives on electrified lines . The word Shosholoza means something like go ahead courageously and is the title of a South African folk song. Meyl stands for the long-distance train itself.
In January 2020 the Shosholoza Meyl served the following lines
• Johannesburg - Cape Town
• Johannesburg– Port Elizabeth
• Johannesburg– East London
• Johannesburg– Durban
• Johannesburg– Komatipoort
• Johannesburg– Musina
The trains run in economy and - in some cases - tourist class. Car transport is offered on the Johannesburg – Cape Town and Johannesburg – Durban lines.
Kroonstad railway accident in 2018
On January 4, 2018, a Shosholoza Meyl train between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg collided with a truck at a level crossing between Hennenman and Kroonstad . 19 people were killed in the accident; more than 250 were injured.
