The original Park Station (then: Park Halt) was commissioned by the South African government in 1895 and designed by the Dutch architect Jacob Klinkhammer. The steel platform roof was made in Rotterdam between 1896 and 1897 . Since 1995 it has stood on Nelson Mandela Bridge in the Newtown district.

In 1930 a new station building was built based on the design by the architect Gordon Leith. Between 1948 and 1965, the entire station was rebuilt and received its current appearance.
