Vereeniging ( Afrikaans for 'association') is a city in Gauteng Province in South Africa . The city lies on the river Vaal , on the southern edge of the Johannesburg metropolitan area and has 99,787 inhabitants (as of 2011).

The water power of the Vaal is used for energy generation, which helped Vereeniging to become a center of the mining industry , especially iron smelting and coal mining . The city supplies a large part of Gauteng with electricity through its power stations. In Vereeniging there is one of the largest dams in South Africa, the Vaal reservoir .

Vereeniging was founded by Buren in 1892 . The Treaty of Vereeniging ended the Second Boer War in 1902 .
