Krugersdorp is a town with 140,643 inhabitants (as of 2011) in the municipality of Mogale City , West Rand District , Gauteng Province in South Africa . It is located 25 kilometers northwest of Johannesburg .

The town was founded in 1887 by Marthinus Wessel Pretorius after gold was found on his farm Paardekraal. It is named after Paul Kruger , the President of the South African Republic . From 1979 to 1993 Krugersdorp was the seat of an undercover police unit, which was named Vlakplaas after its headquarters and was responsible for numerous political murders and other acts of violence. The D-World Ice Hockey Championship was held in the city's modern sports facilities in 1999 .

To this day, mining is the city's economic base. Gold , manganese , iron , asbestos and lime are mined ; uranium extraction is also carried out.
