John Trevor Blokdyk (born November 30, 1935 in Krugersdorp , † March 19, 1995 in Hekpoort ) was a South African speedway champion and racing car driver .

Career

In his younger years Blokdyk was South African speedway champion several times before he first came to Europe in the early 1960s to compete in Formula Junior . When he did not succeed, he returned to South Africa for a year to compete in national races. A year later he was seen again on European racing tracks. Blokdyk, who was a quick and fair driver, was again involved in Formula Junior. He finished second in the races in Nogaro and Caserta.

Blokdyk financed his races out of his own pocket and was rarely able to contest an entire season. He moved several times between Europe and South Africa until late in the 1960s. He drove in Formula 3 for a long time , had his strongest season in 1965 when he was fighting for the overall lead until a serious accident in Alpi put him out of action for three months.

Blokdyk also tried twice in the automobile world championship . At the South African Grand Prix in 1963 and 1965, he drove a private Cooper . In 1963 he was twelfth, but in 1965 he did not qualify. He raced in his home country until the mid-1970s, and after his retirement earned his living as a farmer. Popular in South Africa, the driver died of a heart attack at the age of 59 .
