Reports
background
There was a driver change for the factory teams. Ferrari replaced Willy Mairesse with Ludovico Scarfiotti , who made his debut in the automobile world championship. Scarfiotti mainly drove races in the sports car world championship and took part in individual Grand Prix for Ferrari in the following years. Scarfiotti's teammate was John Surtees . Mairesse paused three races and returned to Ferrari at the German Grand Prix . He was recovering from his injuries sustained in an accident in the 1963 Le Mans 24-hour race . Another debutant was Gerhard Mitter , who drove alongside Carel Godin de Beaufort for Ecurie Maarsbergen . Mitter also competed in individual Formula 1 races in the following years. Scirocco Powell was not registered for the Dutch Grand Prix, ATS drove the second race, but then paused for three races and did not return until the Italian Grand Prix .
After Lotus had achieved the first successes with a monocoque on the Lotus 25 , BRM also built such a car, the BRM P61 . This vehicle had half a monocoque and was entered for a Grand Prix for the first time, but not yet used. Both Graham Hill and Richie Ginther drove the old BRM P57 .
With Joakim Bonnier , Jack Brabham and Graham Hill, three former winners took part in the Grand Prix, with the constructors Ferrari had previously won four times, BRM twice and Cooper once. Bruce McLaren led the drivers' championship for the last time in his career. He was one point ahead of the tied Graham Hill, Jim Clark and Ginther. In the constructors' championship, BRM was two points ahead of Lotus and Cooper.
training
As in several races before, the training was a duel between Clark and Graham Hill, which Clark won for the second time in the season. He reached pole position with more than half a second ahead of the time of his competitor Graham Hill. For Clark this was the prelude to another series of first starting positions, in which he started the race four times in a row from first position. Graham Hill qualified in second, just ahead of McLaren and Brabham, while Surtees was fifth. With Lotus, BRM, Cooper, Brabham and Ferrari, five different designers took the first five places.
Ginther qualified sixth ahead of Innes Ireland's BRP and the private Cooper of Bonnier's Rob Walker Racing Team . The first ten were completed by Tony Maggs and Trevor Taylor . Chris Amon qualified the only Lola in the field in twelfth place, ATS took 13th and 15th place. The private Porsches of Ecurie Maarsbergen, which started from the rear, were no longer competitive .
run
Clark won the start and took the lead. The positions immediately behind him also remained unchanged, with Graham Hill second ahead of McLaren and Brabham. While Clark began to continuously expand his lead over the competition in the first laps of the race, the order in the following positions was mainly determined by failures. Mitter retired on the second lap of the race with a damaged clutch, followed by the two works Cooper from McLaren and Maggs. At McLaren the reason for failure was a gearbox failure, at Maggs the engine overheated. In laps 15 and 17 the two ATS were eliminated one after the other, with Phil Hill a suspension damage was the cause, with Giancarlo Baghetti the ignition.
At the front, Clark's lead over the rest of the field widened as the pursuers were engaged in one-on-one battles. Brabham attacked Graham Hill on lap five and passed him, but failed to pull away. Surtees and Dan Gurney dueled for fourth place at the same time. After Graham Hill countered Brabham and regained second place, both were eliminated a few laps before the end of the race. Brabham had an accident as his accelerator pedal stuck. Graham Hill had to pit due to engine overheating, as a result of which Surtees improved to second ahead of Gurney to third. Graham Hill continued the race one more time, but when attempting to overtake Gurney the engine overheated again and Graham Hill was eliminated.
Clark dominated the entire Grand Prix and won overwhelmingly by lapping the entire field. In addition to the victory, the pole position and the fastest race lap, which was also a new course record, he also led every race lap. So he managed a Grand Slam . With the second victory in a row, Clark also took the lead in the drivers' world championship. In the following two years, Clark also won the race on Lotus. On lap 63, Gurney overtook Surtees, who made a mistake, and came in second. This was the best racing result for the designer Brabham so far. With Surtees' third place, Ferrari achieved a podium again after almost a year, the last time this was when Phil Hill was third in the Belgian Grand Prix in 1962 . Ireland crossed the finish line in fourth place. This race result brought the first points in the automobile world championship for the designer BRP. Ginther was fifth, so there were five different constructors in the points. Scarfiotti achieved a point in his debut race with sixth place. On the other places Joseph Siffert was classified ahead of Jim Hall , Carel Godin de Beaufort , Taylor and Bonnier.
In the drivers' championship, Clark was seven points ahead of Ginther and eight points ahead of McLaren and Gurney. Lotus took first place in the constructors' championship and, after the Grand Prix, was five points ahead of BRM and nine points ahead of Cooper and Brabham.
