Reports
background
After an unsuccessful attempt in the previous year to slow down the track with a temporary chicane, a new combination of bends was added in time for the 1980 Grand Prix in the eastern part of the Circuit Zandvoort , which was much better integrated into the track characteristics.
Since the Team Lotus continued a third factory car for Nigel Mansell began, Ensign Racing British occasion driver Geoff Lees hired as an additional driver and Vittorio Brambilla of Alfa Romeo as a successor to the fatally injured Patrick Depailler was signed, entered for the first time since the Grand Prix Belgium is again offering 28 drivers and vehicles for training. Conversely, this meant that four pilots would fail to qualify for one of the 24 permitted starting positions.
Jochen Mass initially took part in the training two weeks after his serious accident in Austria , but found that this led to severe neck pain. The Tyrrell team then let their test driver Mike Thackwell step in as a replacement for Mass at Arrows . However, he was one of the four pilots who did not qualify. Otherwise, at the age of 19, he would have been the youngest pilot at the time who would have participated in a Grand Prix.
McLaren registered the new M30 for Alain Prost for the first time .
training
Several accidents occurred during the training sessions, including Alan Jones , none of which caused serious injuries.
René Arnoux again completed the fastest training lap and qualified for pole position in front of his Renault teammate Jean-Pierre Jabouille . The two Williams drivers Carlos Reutemann and Alan Jones formed the second row from Nelson Piquet and Jacques Laffite . Gilles Villeneuve and Bruno Giacomelli followed in the fourth row .
run
Alan Jones had taken the lead after a good start, but ran over a curb on lap two at an awkward angle , which affected the handling of his car. A necessary repair stop at the pits threw him back to the end of the field. Arnoux then took the lead from Jabouille, Piquet, Villeneuve and Giacomelli.
At the beginning of the third lap, three overtaking maneuvers took place in the front field in the Tarzanbocht . Laffite took over the lead from Arnoux, Jabouille overtook Reutemann and Villeneuve passed Piquet. Meanwhile, Elio de Angelis and Didier Pironi collided in midfield . Both had to give up the race.
On the sixth lap, Villeneuve took third place as Jabouille made a pit stop. By lap 13, Piquet fought his way past Villeneuve, Arnoux and Laffite to the top and defended this position for the rest of the afternoon. Due to tire problems, Villeneuve had to surrender his fourth place to Giacomelli, who overtook Arnoux on lap 16 and caught up with Laffite. However, when he tried to overtake Laffite, he made a mistake that dropped him to seventh place.
On the 61st lap, Derek Daly was involved in a spectacular accident through no fault of his own in Austria, as he had done two weeks earlier, when a brake disc broke, which in turn caused a tire damage. The car crashed violently into the boundary, flew through the air and landed upside down on one of the stacks of tires that were lined up to protect against the guardrails.
In the closing stages of the race, Arnoux took second place after an overtaking maneuver against Laffite. Carlos Reutemann, Jean-Pierre Jarier and Alain Prost took the other places in the points.
With his win, Nelson Piquet consolidated his second place in the drivers' world championship and came within two points of Alan Jones, who was still in the lead, who only finished eleventh, three laps behind, due to the long pit stop at the start of the race reached and remained without points.
