The Dutch Grand Prix took place again after two years, and no former winners entered the race. The 1955 Dutch Grand Prix was won by Juan Manuel Fangio , but he continued to pause and had only taken part in a race in the 1958 Formula 1 season.

The British teams Vanwall , Cooper , BRM and Lotus competed with unchanged driver pairings. The Rob Walker Racing Team , which won the first two races of the season, also started again with a car for Maurice Trintignant . Ferrari reduced the number of cars used to three and drove with Mike Hawthorn , Luigi Musso and Peter Collins , which caused Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips to pause again. With Giorgio Scarlatti , Jo Bonnier , Masten Gregory and Horace Gould , four drivers entered the race with private Maserati 250Fs , with Gregory taking over Gould's car after practice.

Carel Godin de Beaufort started for the first time in Formula 1 with a private Porsche 718 , after taking part in the 1958 German Grand Prix as part of the Formula 2 race for Porsche . Together with the Cooper T45 , two different cars with rear engines competed in the race.

In the drivers' standings, Musso was four points ahead of Stirling Moss and Trintignant, who each won a race. Cooper led the constructors' championship, four points ahead of Ferrari.

training

Training for the 1958 Dutch Grand Prix was dominated by Vanwall, who again qualified all three cars on the first three starting positions. Stuart Lewis-Evans was a little less than a second ahead of Stirling Moss , who was just ahead of Tony Brooks . For Lewis-Evans it was the second and last pole position of his career, he died at the end of the season from the consequences of the severe burn injuries he sustained in an accident at the 1958 Grand Prix of Morocco .

Behind the Vanwall, Jean Behra also qualified for the front row in the BRM, he was only three tenths of a second short of Brooks' time. Jack Brabham placed fifth in the Cooper, also just behind Behra in the time class, which meant that a three-way battle between Vanwall, Cooper and BRM was to be expected for the race.

Hawthorn qualified as the best Ferrari driver in sixth, his teammates started from tenth and twelfth. Harry Schell in the second BRM finished seventh ahead of the winner of the previous race, Trintignant. Roy Salvadori in the second Cooper completed the top ten.

Lotus, who were only taking part in their second race, started from eleventh and thirteenth place, and Cliff Allison was again faster than Graham Hill . Gregory took over Gould's car in practice and was the best-placed driver, the one with private cars in 14th position, while Beaufort's Porsche was not competitive and Beaufort only qualified on the last grid position on the grid.

run

Moss took the lead of the race right from the start, Lewis-Evans positioned himself in second place behind Moss. Schell, who started from seventh place, made up most of the positions at the start and moved up to third. Brooks car was hit in the rear area by another car, so he was forced to pit a few laps later for repairs, but on lap 13 Brooks was eliminated with a broken half-wave. Salvadori inherited fourth place in the Cooper. The second retirement of the race followed on lap 16, Gregory parked his Maserati with a defective fuel pump.

On the twelfth lap of the race, Schell overtook Lewis-Evans and brought the BRM to second place, but Moss had extended his lead to such an extent that he could no longer be overtaken by the end of the race. Behind Lewis-Evans, Schell's team-mate Behra first overtook Hawthorn in the Ferrari and then Savadori. The Ferrari was not competitive compared to the British competition at the 1958 Dutch Grand Prix, Hawthorn only held fifth, while his team-mate Collins was eliminated on lap 32 with a gearbox failure. On lap 41, Hill also retired in his second race because his car overheated, Lewis-Evans followed four laps later with an engine failure, causing Behra to take third place. Vanwall thus continued the high failure rate of his cars, but Moss was spared technical defects in this race. Another retirement occurred on lap 50, Scarlatti also parked his Maserati with a broken half-wave.

Moss won his second race of the season, for Vanwall it was the first victory in the Formula 1 season, since Moss won the opening race on Cooper. With second place from Schell and third place from Behra, BRM achieved the best racing result in their history to date, but for both drivers it was the last podium finish of their Formula 1 careers. Salvadori crossed the finish line in fourth place, scoring more points for Cooper, the only non-British car in the points was Hawthorn in a Ferrari in fifth. Moss received the point for the fastest race lap.

Since the leader in the drivers 'standings, Musso, only finished seventh behind Allison in the Lotus and thus did not score any points, Moss took the lead in the drivers' standings with a five-point lead. After the race, Schell was fourth with the same number of points as third-placed Trintignant. In the constructors' championship, Cooper increased his lead over Ferrari by one point to five points, Vanwall scored the first points of the season and was tied with BRM in third place.
