Stuart Lewis-Evans (born April 20, 1930 in Luton , England , † October 25, 1958 in East Grinstead , Sussex ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Like many racers of that era earned Lewis-Evans, the son of a garage owner, his spurs in motorsport race in the 500-cm 3 class, which at that time attracted a large field of young drivers and brands in the UK. Stuart's father also took part in these races, and father and son often drove against each other. In 1956, the big teams noticed him, first he came to Connaught , for which he won a non-World Championship run on the Goodwood Circuit in 1957 . In his first World Championship appearance, the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix , he immediately finished fourth. Ferrari then gave him a cockpit at the 24-hour Le Mans race , which he finished fifth. As a result, he moved to the British Vanwall racing team , where he was only the third driver behind Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks , but still stood out with good performances. He finished fifth in the Pescara Grand Prix and took pole position at the Italian Grand Prix .

In the 1958 Formula 1 season , Lewis-Evans played a key role in helping his Vanwall team win the first-ever constructors' title. With two third places (in Belgium and Portugal) and a fourth place in Great Britain, he finished ninth in the World Cup. His fate overtook him at the last race of the season, the Grand Prix of Morocco in Casablanca on October 19th. On lap 42 his Vanwall had a major engine failure, Lewis-Evans stopped in the sand next to the track and the car went up in flames. The Englishman crawled out of his car with severe burns, but went into shock and ran away from the firefighters who wanted to help him.

His burn injuries were initially not life-threatening. Only through the improper help of the Moroccan helpers (non-sterile blankets and bandages) did the injuries worsen. Lewis-Evans only flew to England the next day in the same plane as world champion Mike Hawthorn and was only then taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to serious burn injuries five days later.

The death of the popular, only 28-year-old driver after the fatal accidents involving Luigi Musso and Peter Collins was another shock for Formula 1 and may have contributed to Vanwall's withdrawal from Formula 1 at the end of the season.
