Ferrari 315S

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ferrari 315S was a racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in sports car races in 1957.

Development history

Like the Ferrari 290S and the successor model, the 335S , the Ferrari 315S was also based on the Ferrari 290MM from 1956. Ferrari had grown up to be a tough opponent in the sports car world championship with Maserati and their 450S . In 1957 an arms race began, which Ferrari initially answered with the 315S. The four-camshaft engine already used in the 290S was revised by Vittorio Jano . With three Weber quadruple carburetors, with each cylinder having a nozzle, the Tipo 136 developed 350 hp at 7200 rpm. The maximum torque was 313 Nm at 5200 rpm. This concept created room for improvement and minimized the risk of valve damage from over-revving the engine. The car had a power only surpassed by the 335S.

Racing history

Even top drivers like Piero Taruffi were amazed at the performance. Taruffi in the original: On every straight 200 or 300 meters in length, the speed climbed to over 200 km / h. In second gear, the wheels spun at 140 to 150 km / h and you were pressed into the seat with almost all of your body weight. In the wet, the rear wheels spun when I gave full throttle in fourth gear at 200 km / h .

On the Mulsanne Straight in Le Mans , the 315S were measured at 266.1 km / h, the 335S were still 10 km / h faster. Only the Maserati 450S could keep up with this speed. Test driver Martino Severi reached a top speed of 290 km / h in test drives in a straight line.

It was also Piero Taruffi who took the 315S's biggest victory when he won the Mille Miglia in 1957, ahead of Wolfgang von Trips in the second 315S. The brakes were a weak point of the 315S. In Le Mans just a 315S crossed the finish line. Severi and Stuart Lewis-Evans finished fifth in the overall standings.
