The Ferrari 375 Indianapolis was a Scuderia Ferrari monoposto developed from the Ferrari 375F1 Formula 1 car .

Development history

The car was built for the 500 miles from Indianapolis , which were rated for the driver's world championship from 1950 to 1960 . The vehicles differ from the 375F1 in that they have a slightly longer wheelbase (2420 mm) and a stiffer frame. Five copies were made in 1952, a sixth in late 1953 with a shorter wheelbase and tubular space frame .

Racing history

At the 500 miles of Indianapolis in 1952 , Alberto Ascari was unsuccessful with the works car and retired early, the other Ferraris could not qualify. Three cars were sold to private drivers and ran in Formula Libre until the mid-1950s . There, the vehicles had in road racing far more success than in the Oval of Indianapolis , for which they were originally built.
