Ferrari 290S
The Ferrari 290S was a racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in sports car races in 1957.
technology
The Ferrari 290S was the modified version of the Ferrari 290MM from 1956. The heart of the car was the new Ferrari four-camshaft engine , which was also used in the 315S and 335S that same year . In the 290S this engine developed 330 hp. Otherwise the chassis and body of the 290MM remained unchanged.
Races
Two of the 290S were built and only competed at the factory in a sports car race, as Ferrari was already working on the 315S at the beginning of the year. At the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires in 1957 , the Musso / von Trips and Collins / Castellotti teams started on the two 290S. Peter Collins had an engine failure after just three laps and switched to Masten Gregory and Cesare Perdisa in the 290MM. The duo Musso / Trips fared not much better, who had to park the second 290S in the pits after permanent problems with the ignition after driving 500 kilometers. Musso also switched to the Gregory car, so that at the end of the race a team of four clinched victory.
Chassis 0656 was registered by the American George Tilp in the 12-hour race in Sebring . Masten Gregory and Lou Brero achieved fourth place in the overall standings.
