The Ferrari F1 / 86 was the Formula 1 racing cars the Scuderia Ferrari , of 1986 was used in Formula 1 world championship.
Development history and technology
The designer was the Briton Harvey Postlethwaite , who was already responsible for the predecessor Ferrari 156/85 . The F1 / 86 was based on the previous year's car and was only revised for the new season. The 156/85 was a fast car, but it was unreliable. Essentially, the changes were aimed at the reliability of the car.
From the outside, the larger dimensions of the new vehicle and the change in the bonnet that enclosed the roll bar, which should be better for cooling the engine, were recognizable. The Tipo 032 motor was a further development of the motors used in previous years. Ferrari was the only team to use an engine with a cylinder bank angle of 120 °. It was considered the most powerful engine of the 1986 season.
driver
As in the previous year, the driver pairing consisted of the Italian Michele Alboreto and the Swede Stefan Johansson .
Racing history
The goal of building a fast and at the same time stable racing car was not achieved. Compared to the previous season, the car was not only slower than the competition, but also, like its predecessor, not reliable enough. Although Ferrari had the most powerful engine, it was unable to use this advantage in the battle for the world championship. The engine suffered from excessively high temperatures. It was not possible to enlarge the air inlets, as this would have worsened the aerodynamics.
The biggest problem was the further development of the car. In-house engineering teams worked for the chassis and engine, whereby the chassis department always had to follow the specifications of the engine. So it was difficult to implement the engine power. The cylinder bank angle of 120 ° was found to be another serious problem. As a result, the engine was very wide compared to the competition, so the chassis was accordingly very wide. As a result, a new engine with a cylinder bank angle of 90 ° was designed for the 1987 season .
Because of these problems, Ferrari was unable to compete in the 1986 season. Neither a pole position, a fastest lap nor a race win could be achieved. For Ferrari it was the first winless season since 1980 . Only five podium places - four third places for Stefan Johansson and a second place for Michele Alboreto were achieved. Ferrari finished the season in fourth overall with 37 points.
