The 1986 Austrian Grand Prix took place on August 17th at the Österreichring near Zeltweg and was the twelfth race of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
With the field of participants unchanged, Formula 1 started the twelfth World Championship round of the year in Austria one week after the Grand Prix premiere in Hungary .
At Arrows and Minardi there was still only one copy of the new A8 and M186 cars . The respective teammates took turns in it.
training
Surprisingly, Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger, two drivers of the relatively young but ambitious Benetton-BMW team, qualified for the front row. In addition to McLaren Porsche driver Keke Rosberg , Riccardo Patrese, a third driver equipped with a BMW engine, qualified for one of the top places in the Brabham . The reigning world champion Alain Prost finished in fifth place ahead of his three competitors in the fight for the world title, Nigel Mansell , Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna .
During the warm-up , problems with Father's car meant that he would not have been able to take part in the race if his team-mate Derek Warwick, who was not well placed on the grid, had not made his car available and in turn had not started.
run
Berger initially took the lead ahead of Fabi, Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Rosberg and Senna. While the two Benetton drivers were able to gain a lead, Senna fell far behind from the seventh lap due to an electrical fault and was finally eliminated due to an engine failure.
On the 17th lap, Fabi took the lead, which he only kept for a few meters because he had to give up due to an engine problem. Prost lost second place to Mansell with a pit stop to change tires on lap 21. He took the lead on the 26th lap when Berger had to go to the pits due to an electrical fault. The Austrian was the last to return to the track after a repair. When Mansell had his tires changed on lap 29, Prost took the lead and defended it to the finish. This was aided by the fact that both Williams drivers retired due to technical defects.
Behind Prost reached the two Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson as well as the driver of Lola Vehicles onset Team Haas , Alan Jones and Patrick Tambay , destination, and thus achieved the best result for their respective team in the season 1986. Similarly fared Christian Danner , who as sixth not only secured his first World Championship point in Formula 1, but also the only point result for Arrows in the current season.
