background
The Austrian Grand Prix was held for the second time in 1970 after six years of abstinence. After an airfield course in Zeltweg had served as the venue for the premiere in 1964 , the Österreichring , not far from it, was now used , which was built and opened in 1969. The original route variant without chicane at the end of the start / finish straight was used.
In the private team of Frank Williams was Brian Redman by Tim Give replaced. Ferrari registered Ignazio Giunti for the race as the third driver in addition to the regular line-up Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni . In addition to Lotus , BRM and McLaren, there was a fourth works team with three drivers each. Graham Hill and Ronnie Peterson , who each had participated as drivers for customer teams in most of the remaining races of the season, did not participate in the race.
training
The world championship leader Jochen Rindt secured pole position in front of the home crowd in front of the two Ferraris of Clay Regazzoni and Jacky Ickx.
run
The large number of spectators who traveled to the race saw a Ferrari double victory after local hero Jochen Rindt in a Lotus was eliminated in fourth place after only a third of the race distance due to an engine failure. Rolf Stommelen finished third, about one and a half minutes behind, and achieved the only podium of his Formula 1 career. Jean-Pierre Beltoise had previously occupied third place for many laps, but fell back to sixth place behind the two BRM drivers Pedro Rodríguez and Jackie Oliver in the final phase of the race due to problems with the fuel supply .
