The 1970 US Grand Prix took place on October 4th at Watkins Glen International Race Track in New York State and was the twelfth race of the 1970 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
Around a month after the fatal accident of Jochen Rindt , who is still the leader in the world championship standings , Jacky Ickx was the only driver who still had a chance of winning the world championship if he had two wins in the last two races. His team Ferrari had won the past three Grands Prix and was therefore considered a favorite. The Ferrari 312B was end of the season next to the Lotus 72 as the best car in the field.
After the Lotus factory team had skipped the previous Grand Prix of Canada , they started again, on the one hand to defend first place in the constructors' world championship and, on the other hand, to posthumously secure the driver’s world championship title for Jochen Rindt. Emerson Fittipaldi became the new Lotus regular driver and John Miles , who had ended his racing career in Monza , was replaced by Reine Wisell .
In addition to the team founder and regular driver John Surtees , a second vehicle, which was driven by Derek Bell , was used for the first time at Surtees on this race weekend . With an additional P153 for Peter Westbury, BRM reported four works cars for the only time this season.
training
The fastest 24 of the total of 27 registered drivers were approved for the race. With a training best time of around 0.5 seconds faster, Jacky Ickx secured pole position ahead of Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 001. Emerson Fittipaldi and Pedro Rodríguez shared the second row . With fifth placed Chris Amon there were five different vehicles on the first five starting positions.
run
Stewart immediately took the lead, followed by Rodríguez, Ickx and Regazzoni. Fittipaldi had dropped to eighth due to a bad start. John Surtees and Jackie Oliver , who were directly in front of him, were eliminated in the course of the first laps due to mechanical defects. On lap 16, Rodríguez, who came second, was overtaken by Ickx and a short time later by Regazzoni. As both Amon and Regazzoni had to pit to change tires, Fittipaldi moved up to fourth place without a fight.
When Ickx had to head for the pits after 56 laps due to a leaky fuel tank and thus fell back over a lap, Jochen Rindt was the first and, to date, only posthumous world champion in Formula 1 history. Stewart seemed to have the race under control by a comfortable margin when he suddenly retired on lap 83 due to an oil leak. The now leading Rodríguez was 20 seconds ahead of Fittipaldi before running out of fuel on the seventh to last lap and rolling into the pits.
Fittipaldi finally took his first Grand Prix victory ahead of Rodríguez, who had refilled, and Reine Wisell, who finished his Formula 1 debut with an impressive third place.
Registration list
1 Jackie Stewart only drove the March 701 with start number 33 in the first practice session and from then on used the Tyrrell 001 with start number 1.
