The 1970 British Grand Prix took place on July 18 and was the seventh race of the 1970 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

A total of 25 racing cars were entered for the Grand Prix, including the Surtees TS7 for the first time . Team boss and driver John Surtees started a world championship run in his own car for the first time, after he had competed in his previous races in the 1970 season in a McLaren M7 used for his private team.

Lotus reported a third factory car. In addition to Jochen Rindt and John Miles in their Lotus 72 , Emerson Fittipaldi was able to participate in a Lotus 49C . After a break in the previous race, Frank Williams' private team initially started again, with Brian Redman as driver. Mario Andretti , who had paused four races, was also there again.

It was the first Grand Prix participation for Emerson Fittipaldi and the last for Dan Gurney .

training

Rolf Stommelen had an accident during training and damaged his car so that he could not take part in the race. He himself was unharmed. Brian Redman's listing was withdrawn due to a technical problem after training.

The two fastest in training at the same time, Jochen Rindt and Jack Brabham , shared the front row with Jacky Ickx, who was three tenths of a second slower . The five fastest lap times were achieved with five different vehicles.

run

Immediately after the start, Jacky Ickx took the lead. In this position, however, he retired after six laps due to a gearbox failure. At around the same time, Rindt overtook Brabham and was the new leader. However, he could not set himself apart from the Australian. In the meantime, he even took the lead. On lap 69, Rindt made a shift error and it looked like this would have decided the race in Jack Brabham's favor. But on the last lap he ran out of gas a few hundred meters from the finish line. Jochen Rindt managed to catch up and catch Brabham, who was still rolling, just before the line. Other drivers were too far behind to overtake Jack Brabham, who crossed the finish line 32.9 seconds after Rindt.
For the time being, Rindt's victory was withdrawn because the stabilizers on the Lotus were not properly attached, which meant that Brabham was declared the winner.
Jackie Oliver had been on the podium in third for most of the race until his engine failed on lap 55. This enabled Denis Hulme to take a podium position.
