backgrounds
After the Austrian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 45 points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was ahead of Mercedes with ten points and Red Bull Racing with 58 points .
At the British Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (ice blue), P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .
The track was completely repaved after the race last year. The side curve of the route in Abbey , Brooklands , Vale and Club Corner was changed to increase the drainage effect. At the exit of the Stowe and at the apex of Club Corner , new curbs have been added behind the existing curbs.
For the first time there were three DRS zones on the route. The first two zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began 30 meters after Aintree Corner and the measuring point was 25 meters before Village Corner . The second DRS zone was on Hangar Straight , 55 meters after the chapel , the measuring point was at the entrance of the Maggotts . The third, new DRS zone began 62 meters behind the Club Corner , the measuring point was 83 meters in front of the Vale .
Marcus Ericsson , (seven), Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Max Verstappen (five each), Brendon Hartley , Sergei Sirotkin , Lance Stroll (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Sergio Pérez , Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (three each), Pierre Gasly , Nico Hülkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (five times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
Race stewards were Tom Kristensen (DEN), Tim Mayer (USA), Steve Stringwell (GBR) and Mümtaz Tahincioğlu (TUR).
free training
In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 27.487 minutes ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Vettel. The training was interrupted by Grosjean after an accident.
In the second free practice, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 27.552 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Since the monocoque of Grosjean's vehicle had to be changed after the accident in the first free practice session, Grosjeans could not take part in the training. Verstappen did not drive a timed lap because after a spin at the beginning of the training session, he hit the barrier and damaged his vehicle.
In the third free practice session, Hamilton was fastest in 1: 26.722 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. The training was interrupted for a long time because of an accident by Hartley. Shortly before the Brooklands, the left front suspension of his Toro Rosso broke for no apparent cause, Hartley lost control and hit the barrier at high speed.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hartley did not take part in qualifying after his accident in third free practice and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. The session was interrupted after an accident by Stroll, who therefore did not set any time and also did not qualify. His team-mate Sirotkin also lost control of his vehicle, but he was able to continue his lap after driving through the gravel bed . Vettel was fastest. Hartley, the Williams drivers, Vandoorne and Sainz were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. Ericsson, Gasly, Alonso, Pérez and Hülkenberg were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton drove the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 25.892 minutes ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. It was Hamilton's 76th pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever recorded on this circuit.
When examining the causes of accidents from Sirotkin and stroll, it was found that in both cases, when you disable the DRS at a stall on the underbody of the Williams FW41 had come. The team therefore decided to replace the rear wings and the engine and radiator covers on both vehicles. Since this was done under parc fermé regulations , both drivers therefore had to start from the pit lane. Hartley also had to start out of the pit lane after changing the monocoque on his Toro Rosso. The team also decided to change the combustion engine and turbocharger, which would have meant moving back ten starting positions, but was obsolete due to the start from the pit lane.
run
Vettel and Bottas started well, both overtook Hamilton. Pérez spun in the first corner and fell back to 18th place behind the two Williams who had started out of the pit lane. When approaching turn three , Raikkonen attacked Hamilton, but braked himself and hit Hamilton. This turned and fell back to last place. Verstappen and Ricciardo overtook Raikkonen, who had to leave the track as a result of the collision. Both Haas drivers had to evade Hamilton to the outside and lost positions to Hülkenberg, Leclerc, Ocon and Sainz. Raikkonen overtook Ricciardo again on the first lap and was fourth. At the end of the first lap, Vettel was leading in front of Bottas, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Leclerc, Ocon and Sainz. Hartley, who started the race from 20th place on the grid after his accident in third free practice, gave up the race after the first lap.
In the eleventh lap, Vettel was already six seconds ahead of Bottas, who was five seconds ahead of Verstappen. Hamilton had worked his way back to sixth place by then, but was 27 seconds behind Vettel. Raikkonen received a ten-second time penalty for causing the collision with Hamilton. On lap 14, Raikkonen drove to the pits to change tires and served his sentence. He switched from soft to medium . He fell back to tenth behind Sainz. With his fresh tires he then drove the fastest race lap up to that point several times and overtook Ocon, Leclerc and Hülkenberg.
Leclerc drove to the pit stop on lap 19, he also switched to medium . However, since a wheel was not correctly attached during the pit stop, he had to park his car shortly afterwards. Ricciardo and Verstappen also pitted to change tires on medium , both came back on the track before Raikkonen.
On lap 21 Vettel then pitted, he also switched to medium . Vettel came back on track before Hamilton, who was now in third place. One lap later, Bottas also switched to Medium , he came back on the track behind Hamilton, who let him pass immediately and then turned into the pit lane himself. He also switched to medium , just like the two Haas pilots.
Ricciardo was the first driver to change tires for the second time, he switched to soft and fell back to sixth place. After 30 laps, Vettel was leading in front of Bottas, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Alonso and Magnussen. On lap 32, Ericsson turned in corner one while lying in 14th place and hit the tire wall. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicle . Vettel, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Alonso, Sainz, Gasly and Pérez used this to switch to soft again . Bottas led before Vettel, Hamilton, Verstappen, Raikkonen and Ricciardo.
At the restart on lap 38 there were no changes in position. Shortly afterwards, Raikkonen overtook Verstappen, but a few corners later he passed Raikkonen again. Sainz collided with Grosjean while attempting to overtake, and both vehicles then hit the lane. Rennleitunc sent the safety car out again.
The race was reopened on lap 42. On the following lap, Raikkonen overtook Verstappen. This spun on lap 46 shortly afterwards gave up the race with transmission problems. Vettel increased the pressure on Bottas and passed on lap 47. Then he drove the fastest race lap. Bottas also had to let Hamilton and Raikkonen pass.
Gasly overtook Pérez shortly before the finish, but pushed him off the track. Since he then did not let Pérez pass voluntarily, he received a subsequent five-second time penalty and thus fell back to 11th place.
Vettel won the race ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. It was the 51st victory for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fourth of which this season. With 51 victories, he was now together with Alain Prost in third place in the list of Formula 1 Grand Prix winners . It was also his second British Grand Prix victory after 2009 , with a different route at the time. Hamilton took his 123rd Formula 1 World Championship podium but failed to win the Great Britain Grand Prix for the first time since 2013 . Raikkonen achieved his 97th podium finish in the Formula 1 World Championship. The other points were placed by Bottas, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Ocon, Alonso, Magnussen and Pérez.
In the drivers 'and constructors' championships, the first three positions remained unchanged.
