The Chinese Grand Prix 2018 (official Formula 1 2018 Heineken Chinese Grand Prix ) took place on 15 April at the Shanghai International Circuit in Shanghai instead and was the third race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2018 .

After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 17 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 28 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Ferrari led with ten points ahead of Mercedes and with 43 points ahead of McLaren .

At the Chinese Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year there was only one small change to the track, the inner concrete surface in the pit lane was renewed.

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was 35 meters before turn 16 , the zone itself was on the start-finish straight and began 98 meters after the last curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone was in turn twelve , the DRS was then allowed to be activated 752 meters before turn 14 .

Kevin Magnussen (six), Stoffel Vandoorne (five), Brendon Hartley , Carlos Sainz jr. (four each), Romain Grosjean , Kimi Räikkönen , Max Verstappen , Vettel (three each), Marcus Ericsson , Hamilton, Nico Hülkenberg , Daniel Ricciardo (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (five times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Raikkonen and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Zheng Honghai (CHN), Michael Masi (AUS), Nish Shetty (SIN) and Danny Sullivan (USA).

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 33.999 minutes, ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 33.482 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 33.018 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. The Sauber, the Williams drivers and Pierre Gasly were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. The Ferrari and Mercedes drivers achieved their best time on the soft mix, all other drivers on Ultrasoft . Hartley, the McLaren drivers, Ocon and Magnussen were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 31.095 minutes, Vettel drove the best time ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. It was the 52nd pole position for Vettel and the fastest lap time ever achieved on this track.

Ericsson was moved five places back for disregarding double-waved yellow flags. He also received three penalty points.

Ricciardo won the race ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. It was the sixth victory for Ricciardo in the Formula 1 World Championship. Bottas and Räikkönen each achieved the second podium finish of the season. The remaining points were placed by Hamilton, Verstappen, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Vettel, Sainz and Magnussen.

In the drivers' championship, the first three positions remained unchanged, but the gaps narrowed. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes took the lead from Ferrari, Red Bull was now third again.
