The Grand Prix of Azerbaijan in 2018 (officially 2018 Formula 1 Grand Prix Azerbaijan ) was held on 29 April at the Baku City Circuit in Baku held and was the fourth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2018 .

After the Chinese Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with nine points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 14 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was one point ahead of Ferrari and 30 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red) and P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones on the route , which remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone was on the start-finish straight and began 54 meters after curve 20 , the measuring point was at the apex of the curve. The second zone began 347 meters after turn two , here the measuring point was on the safety car line at the level of the start of the pit entrance.

Kevin Magnussen (six), Marcus Ericsson , Stoffel Vandoorne , Max Verstappen (five each), Brendon Hartley (four), Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez , Kimi Räikkönen , Vettel (three each), Pierre Gasly , Nico Hülkenberg , Daniel Ricciardo , Carlos Sainz jr. (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

Ricciardo was a former winner of the race.

Race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), Dennis Dean (USA), Tom Kristensen (DNK) and Anar Schukurow (AZE).

In the first free practice, Bottas set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 44.242 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Pérez.

In the second free practice, Ricciardo was fastest in 1: 42.795 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Verstappen.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Raikkonen was fastest. The Toro Rosso pilots, Vandoorne, Ericsson and Grosjean were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Raikkonen was fastest. The Williams drivers, Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 41.498 minutes, Vettel set the best time ahead of Raikkonen and Bottas. It was the 53rd pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship, the third in a row.

Hülkenberg was moved five starting positions back due to a premature gear change. Grosjean was also moved five positions back due to a premature gear change.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Pérez. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Sainz, Leclerc, Alonso, Stroll, Vandoorne and Brendon Hartley . With Leclerc, for the first time since Louis Chiron 1950, a Monegasque driver scored points in a Formula 1 world championship race.

Hamilton thus took the lead in the overall standings from Vettel, Räikkönen was now third. Ferrari overtook Mercedes in the constructors' championship, Red Bull Racing remained third.
