Brendon Hartley (born November 10, 1989 in Palmerston North ) is a New Zealand racing driver . He competed in Formula Renault 3.5 from 2009 to 2011 . From 2014 to 2017 he drove for Porsche in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), where he won the driver's world title in 2015 and 2017. In 2017 and 2018 he took part in Formula 1 .
Career
Hartley began his motorsport career at the age of seven in karting . He won the most important kart championships in New Zealand, including four times the internationally renowned Gold Star Series . At the age of thirteen, Hartley won the New Zealand Formula Ford Festival in 2003 and competed in New Zealand's Formula First. In 2004 Hartley drove in New Zealand's Formula Ford and immediately won the runner-up title with six victories. From 2005 Hartley competed in the Toyota Racing Series for two seasons. After finishing fourth in the first season, Hartley finished eighth overall in the second season. Hartley then moved to Europe in 2006 and competed in the Northern European Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . He finished tenth in the Northern European Formula Renault and 13th in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In 2006, he was also included in the Red Bull funding program.
In the 2007 season Hartley moved to Epsilon Euskadi . He drove again in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, whose championship he won this season, and started in the Italian Formula Renault, in which he finished third in the overall classification. In 2008 he competed for Carlin Motorsport in the British Formula 3 Championship . With five wins he finished third behind his two team mates Jaime Alguersuari and Oliver Turvey . Hartley also took part as a guest starter in some races in the Formula 3 Euro Series . At the Formula 3 race in Macau , he finished third from 20th place on the grid. In December 2008 he completed his first Formula 1 test day for Red Bull Racing . In the 2009 Formula 1 season , Hartley was the official reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso . Since Hartley did not have a super license required for the start at the start of the season , he was represented at the first races by David Coulthard . From the Spanish Grand Prix up to and including the Great Britain Grand Prix he was a substitute driver for the two teams and was then replaced by the Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari in order to concentrate on his involvement in Formula 3.
In the 2009 Formula 3 Euro Series season Hartley went for Carlin Motorsport at the start. He won his first race in this series at Brands Hatch and finished eleventh overall at the end of the season. He also competed in the 2009 season of Formula Renault 3.5 for Tech 1 Racing and was 15th in the overall standings. Due to overlapping appointments, Hartley had to cancel two racing weekends in the Euro Series and two racing weekends in the Formula Renault 3.5.
In 2010 Hartley started again for Tech 1 Racing in Formula Renault 3.5. While his teammate Daniel Ricciardo scored several podiums and won two races, Hartley failed to keep up with Ricciardo and he couldn't get past a second place, which was his only podium finish. After six racing weekends he was replaced by Jean-Éric Vergne . Red Bull also stopped promoting Hartley and fired him from his junior team. He then went on to represent Jan Charouz at P1 Motorsport for a race weekend. At the end of the season he finished tenth overall. Until he left the Red Bull support program, he and his teammate Ricciardo worked for the Formula 1 racing teams Red Bull and Toro Rosso as a substitute and test driver for the 2010 season . The two racing drivers took over this position alternately and, if both were prevented, were represented by David Coulthard . In the GP2 series , Hartley found a cockpit at Scuderia Coloni for the last two race weekends of the GP2 series in 2010 . With a seventh place as the best result, he finished 27th in the drivers' standings. In 2011 Hartley completed his third season in Formula Renault 3.5 for Gravity - Charouz Racing . With three third places, Hartley was the best pilot without a win that season and he finished the season in seventh place overall. With this, he clearly prevailed against his team-mate Charouz, who was 25th. Hartley also took part in two GP2 Series race weekends for Ocean Racing Technology this season . He scored the first points for the racing team with a fifth place and was 19th in the championship.
In 2012 Hartley participated in two GP2 series race weekends for Ocean Racing Technology. He scored a point in the process. At the end of the season he finished 25th overall. In addition, Hartley made his debut in endurance racing. For Murphy Prototypes he took part in the 6-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps and, with his team-mates Jody Firth and Warren Hughes, achieved third place in the LMP2 classification . He then started for Murphy Prototypes together with Firth and Hughes in the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans and two races in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS). In the ELMS he was tenth in the LMP2 ranking. He was also employed as a test driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 racing team . In addition to working in the simulator, he also completed test drives on the track. In 2013, Hartley stayed with Murphy Prototypes in the European Le Mans Series. He had changing teammates and won a race with Jonathan Hirschi . He finished fifth in the LMP2 classification. He also competed in the Le Mans 24-hour race for Murphy Prototypes . Hartley was also active in the North American Rolex Sports Car Series for Starworks Motorsport . Together with Scott Mayer he managed a victory. Hartley finished the season in twelfth place in the DP category.
In 2014 , Hartley received a cockpit in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the manufacturer Porsche, which has just entered the championship . His teammates were Timo Bernhard and Mark Webber . Three third places were the best results of the three. Hartley and his teammates finished ninth in the drivers' championship. Hartley also took part in a race for Starworks Motorsport in 2014 for the newly established United SportsCar Championship (USCC). In 2015 Hartley again formed a driver trio with Bernhard and Webber. After a retirement at the season opener, the three drivers finished third at Spa-Francorchamps and second at Le Mans . The following four races at the Nürburgring , in Austin , Fuji and Shanghai were won by the driver trio. A fifth place at the season finale in as-Sachir was enough to win the driver's world championship. Bernhard, Hartley and Webber prevailed with 166 to 161 points against Marcel Fässler , André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer . Hartley also took part in a USCC race for Starworks Motorsport. In 2016 , the driver trio in the WEC was retained and the races at the Nürburgring , Mexico City , Austin and Shanghai were won. In the overall ranking, the team achieved fourth place.

In the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017 Hartley remained at Porsche. Earl Bamber replaced Webber, while Bernhard remained his team-mate. The three drivers won the Le Mans 24-hour race . Hartley also made his Grand Prix debut in the Formula 1 World Championship for Scuderia Toro Rosso and competed in the US Grand Prix . He represented Pierre Gasly at the race , who was competing in the season finale of the Japanese Super Formula this weekend because he still had a chance for the title there, but where the race was canceled after qualifying and not made up due to the weather. After his first Formula 1 race, it was announced that Hartley would also drive the remaining races of the season. This time instead of Daniil Kwjat and at the side of returnees Pierre Gasly.
For the Formula 1 World Championship 2018 Hartley received a regular cockpit at Toro Rosso. In Azerbaijan , he scored his first point in Formula 1 in tenth and became the first New Zealander since Denny Hulme to score points in a race. At the end of the season he was on the 19th championship course.
