2017 Le Mans 24-hour race
The 85th Le Mans 24-hour race , the 85 e Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , also known as 24 Heures du Mans , took place on the Circuit des 24 Heures from June 17 to 18, 2017 .
Before the race
LMP1 class
As in previous years, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the organizer of the 24-hour race, announced a list of the first 14 invitations to the race in June at the end of January 2017. In addition to the overall and class winners of the previous year, the respective winners of the European and Asian Le Mans Series were invited . There were also two racing teams that were nominated by the International Motor Sports Association . In addition, all teams in the four racing classes registered for the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship were given automatic starting rights.
Even before the end of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2016 , a decision was made that had a major impact on the 2017 season and the Le Mans 24-hour race. In October 2016, the Board of Management of Audi AG announced the end of the LMP program at the end of the season. With the exit from the endurance racing and the 23 years ended lasting era of Motorsport Audi Wolfgang Ullrich . Audi competed in Le Mans for the first time under his leadership in 1999 . Just one year later there was the first overall victory, clinched by Tom Kristensen , Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro in the Audi R8 . Another 13 overall victories followed in this 24-hour race . With Audi's withdrawal, the number of manufacturers in the LMP1 class has been reduced from three to two.
The privately run Swiss Rebellion Team also ended the LMP1 program at the end of 2016 and switched to the LMP2 class. This increased the loss of LMP1 vehicles from two to four.
There were also changes to the drivers. With Audi's withdrawal, six LMP1 drivers lost their cockpits. The three-time Le Mans winner André Lotterer , who switched to Porsche , found the best replacement cockpit . There, three of the six driver positions had become vacant. Mark Webber had ended his career at the end of 2016 and the two previous year's winners Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb had no longer received a contract. For they returned Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber in the LMP1 program from Porsche back.
Toyota Motorsport responded to the dramatic failure in 2016 when the leading car lost victory on the penultimate lap and reported a third vehicle. The number 8 Toyota TS050 Hybrid was entrusted to Sébastien Buemi , Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima , who drove the disastrous last part in 2016. In the car with the number 7, the three-time touring car world champion José María López was originally supposed to take the place alongside Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi . The previous regular driver Stéphane Sarrazin was transferred to the third car for Toyota returnees Nicolas Lapierre and Yūji Kunimoto . However, López had a serious accident at the 6-hour race at Silverstone and was unable to start the following 6-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps . As a result, he lacked racing kilometers. Toyota swapped cockpits before the race and placed Sarrazin, who drove with excellent performance in Spa, back in the car with the number 7.
There were also two changes to the planned driver line-up for the ByKolles Racing Team . Only the former Polish Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica , who was supposed to drive the ENSO CLM P1 / 01 , got out of the project in April 2017. James Rossiter was signed for him , who should join Oliver Webb and Dominik Kraihamer in the team. On June 1, the team announced that Rossiter had to do test drives for his traditional Super GT team in Japan on the Le Mans weekend . His replacement was the former Audi LMP1 test driver Marco Bonanomi .
LMP2 class
The LMP2 class had the largest number of starters with 25. Formula 1 record starter Rubens Barrichello was planning his Le Mans debut for Racing Team Nederland of the now 61-year-old Jan Lammers , who won the race with partners Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace in a Jaguar XJR9-LM in 1988 . Third in the team was Frits van Eerd from the Netherlands , co-owner of Jumbo supermarkets and financier of the project. At Signatech Alpine Matmut, Nicolas Lapierre was one of the regular drivers in the races of the world championship. When he switched to Toyota, a driver's seat at Alpine became vacant, which was taken by Romain Dumas. Former Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Jean-Éric Vergne , who competed at CEPC Manor TRS Racing with partners Tor Graves and Jonathan Hirschi, made his Le Mans debut .
LMGT Pro class
As in previous years, the GT class of professionals promised the greatest racing excitement. Five manufacturers competed against each other. In addition to the Ferrari , Ford , Aston Martin and Porsche teams involved in the world championship, Chevrolet was added at Le Mans . As in the previous year, the Ford team led by Chip Ganassi provided the largest line -up. Four vehicles were reported that were driven by an international team of drivers. Of the 12 drivers who started for Ford in 2016, ten were still there in 2017. The changes affected Marino Franchitti , who no longer received a contract and was replaced by Luís Felipe Derani and Sébastien Bourdais . Bourdais, who was originally registered in the number 68 car, had a serious accident in May while training for the Indianapolis 500 mile race . He suffered several pelvic fractures and a fracture of the right hip. Tony Kanaan was announced as a replacement pilot on May 31 . A big absentee at AF Corse was Gianmaria Bruni . The long-time Ferrari factory driver had canceled his contract during the season and switched to Porsche, but was not given the go-ahead for Le Mans. New to the team was Lucas di Grassi , who drove for Audi LMP1 vehicles at Le Mans over the past four years and finished three times on the podium of the top three in the overall standings. At Chevrolet Racing, the three-time overall Le Mans winner Marcel Fässler , also a long-time Audi LMP1 driver, joined the 2-car team.
Both the Porsche GT team and Aston Martin trusted drivers with many years of Le Mans experience. At Porsche they were Richard Lietz , Patrick Pilet and Frédéric Makowiecki , at Aston Martin Nicki Thiim and Darren Turner .
On Wednesday, June 14th, just before the first free practice session, Lucas di Grassi had to announce that he would not start. He had broken his fibula while playing soccer . Michele Rugolo received his place at AF Corse .
LMGT-Am class
The GT-Am class was very busy with 16 starters. Seven Ferrari 488 GTE , a Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 and three Aston Martin Vantage GTE , met on four Porsche 911 RSR and a Chevrolet Corvette C7.R .
Driver categories
In order to be able to take part in one of the races of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24-hour race, the drivers in the four racing classes must meet different conditions. The classifications are made by the Endurance Committee of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile . Without this classification, it is not possible to compete in Le Mans. The classification of the drivers under platinum , gold , silver and bronze is the basis for the participation of the drivers in the racing classes.
In contrast to the rest of the World Championship races, where teams of two are also possible, three drivers per vehicle are compulsory in Le Mans. The ACO can, however, grant exceptions to this rule in the event of force majeure - for example, the failure of a driver just before the race and no further replacement driver reported.
platinum
Platinum, gold and silver drivers are eligible to start in the large LMP class. The platinum drivers must not be older than 50 at the start of the race; they must, among other things, either have a super license, have won the overall ranking of the race once or have a works contract with an automobile manufacturer. For pilots who can show no regular long-distance race starts, results from single-seater used -Rennserien.
gold
Gold drivers basically have to meet the same requirements as platinum drivers, but are between 51 and 59 years old. There are also results from monoposto series and one-make cups.
silver
This classification means either a maximum age of 30 years and failure to meet the platinum / gold requirements or an age over 59 years if they are met. If the driver is over 59 years old and has no platinum / gold status, but has won an international one-make cup and won a GT or sports championship as a teammate of a professional driver, he will also receive silver status.
bronze
This status is given to drivers who have an international B license but have not yet been able to meet the criteria for platinum, gold and silver.
Vehicle class distribution
The drivers were classified as follows:
LMP1 : no bronze drivers allowed
LMP2 : maximum 1 platinum driver; at least 1 silver or bronze driver
LMGT-Pro : No requirements and restrictions
LMGT-Am : 1 bronze driver mandatory; at least 1 silver or bronze driver
Garage 56
Garage 56 was also reserved in 2017 for a team with a special technical innovation. Welter Racing was awarded the contract for a vehicle with a biomethane drive. In December 2016, the team announced that it would not be possible to complete the project before the start of the race.
Pre-tests
The preliminary tests took place on June 4th. Divided into three training units, the 60 registered teams had a total of eight hours to prepare for the race. In the LMP1 class, the three factory Toyota drove the best times. The fastest lap time was achieved by Kamui Kobayashi in the Toyota number 7 with a time of 3: 18.132 minutes. He was 1.6 seconds faster than Neel Jani on his pole position drive in the Porsche 919 Hybrid the year before.
The vehicles in the LMP2 class made a huge leap in lap times. With top speed lap times just under or over the 3-minute-30 mark, the LMP2 prototypes were as fast as the LMP1 cars in the middle of 2000 to 2010. Nelson Panciatici was fastest in the Alpine A470 with a time of 3 : 28.146 minutes. He was faster than Dominik Kraihamer in the Kolles ENSO CLM P1 / 01, who achieved 3: 28.701 minutes.
In the GT cars, the times of the teams and vehicles involved were just as close as in previous years. Oliver Gavin in the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R was fastest with a time of 3: 54.701 minutes.
training
For the third time after 1999 ( Martin Brundle in a Toyota GT-One ) and 2014 (Kazuki Nakajima in a Toyota TS040 Hybrid ) a Toyota was on pole position at Le Mans . The second of the three qualifying sessions was interrupted for 50 minutes at the beginning of the session after Érik Maris had an accident in the Ligier JS P217 . When the track was opened again, Kamui Kobayashi achieved a record time in the Toyota TS050 Hybrid with starting number 7, which is only partially comparable with previous ones, considering the track modifications. Kobayashi drove a time of 3: 14.791 minutes and an average of 251.882 km / h, the fastest lap average achieved so far in Le Mans. This record was held by Hans-Joachim Stuck , who in 1985 in a Porsche 962 C drove an average of 251.815 km / h in a time of 3: 14.8 minutes, but still without the braking chicanes on the Les Hunaudières straight. These were only built after Jo Gartner's fatal accident in 1986 . Jackie Oliver set the absolutely fastest lap time in 1971 in a Porsche 917L in the preliminary tests with 3: 13.6 minutes (average 250.457 km / h) on an even shorter track variant without the Porsche corners. Kobayashi distanced his teammate Nakajima in the Toyota No. 8 by 2.337 seconds.
As expected after the pre-tests, there were new record laps in the LMP2 class. New best times were set in each of the three qualification training sessions. In the end, Alex Lynn was the fastest in the G-Drive-Oreca 07. In the third practice session he drove a time of 3: 25.352 minutes. By way of comparison: that time would have been enough for pole position in 2007 . Back then, Sébastien Bourdais drove a best time of 3: 26.344 minutes in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP .
In the GT classes almost all times were close together. Only three teams in the AM class were more behind. The fastest in the GT Pro was Darren Turner in the Aston Martin with 3: 50.837, a new Le Mans record for GT racing cars. In the AM class, Fernando Rees was the fastest in the Larbre Corvette with a time of 3: 52.843.
Warm-up
In the warm-up, which was held on the Saturday before the race over a period of one hour, the Toyota were also the fastest vehicles on the track. Pole-setter Kamui Kobayashi achieved a time of 3: 18.308 minutes in the Toyota with the number 7. He was 0.353 seconds faster than his team mate Kazuki Nakajima in the car with the number 8. André Lotterer in the third-placed Porsche drove a time of 3: 20.120 minutes.
The course of the race
For Toyota, the race ended in another debacle. In the early evening hours, the hybrid unit on car number 8, in which Sébastien Buemi was second at the time, had to be replaced and the car lost 26 laps. Just after midnight, both of the remaining cars broke down: Kamui Kobayashi had to park the car, which was 1 minute ahead, after a clutch damage after a safety car phase . 30 minutes later, Nicolas Lapierre in the car with the number 9 collided with Simon Trummer's LMP2-Oreca 07 on the ramp to the Dunlop chicane . According to Lapierre, his car was rammed by the Oreca Trummer's. The reason given by the Toyota team management was that the fuel supply was programmed to cut out in order to put the car in so-called sailing mode. The vehicle decelerated briefly and was rammed by the still accelerating Oreca. Trummer vehemently contradicted this process. From his point of view, his car was touched by the side of the Toyota while lapping it when it drove on the far left through the fast right curve. In the accident, the Oreca was so badly damaged that it had to be withdrawn from the race. Lapierre tried to reach the pits at a slow pace. The Toyota had a puncture, broken tire parts first destroyed the exhaust and then parts of the transmission. Just before entering the pit lane, Lapierre had to park the car for good. On Sunday at lunchtime, the number 1 Porsche 919 Hybrid that had been in the lead since the night without oil pressure stopped after the first chicane and could no longer be started by André Lotterer. In the end, the second LMP1 Porsche won, in which the hybrid unit also had to be changed at an early stage of the race. The team lost 18 laps during the repair and dropped to 56th and last place. In the course of the race, the three drivers made up 55 positions and won the race.
Kobayashi's reason for failure was particularly strange. After the pit stop during the safety car phase, the Japanese stopped at the end of the pit lane because a marshals stopped him there while the safety car with the following cars drove past the pit exit. When Kobayashi received a show of hands from another person - whom he interpreted as another outpost - he drove off. However, he was instructed to stop immediately by his race engineer via radio, as driving off would result in a penalty. When Kobayashi received clearance to drive off, the clutch broke and the internal combustion engine died. Since the car was already a few meters outside the pit lane on the track, the mechanics were no longer allowed to push it back and Kobayashi tried to drive 13 kilometers around the course back to the pit with the electric motor, which he was unable to do because the battery was not charged. On the Monday after the race, it emerged that the person who Kobayashi thought was a marshal was racing driver Vincent Capillaire , who gave the Toyota driver a thumbs up. This misunderstanding led to the failure of the leader.
The many different problems faced by the LMP1 racing cars made it possible for an LMP2 vehicle to be in control for the first time in the history of the race. After André Lotterer's retirement in the Porsche, Jackie Chan's Oreca 07 led DC Racing for hours. However, since the LMP2 cars lost around ten seconds per lap to the faster LMP1 cars, it was only a matter of time before the number 2 Porsche that remained in the race took the lead again, which was 1 hour and 15 minutes before The end of the race happened.
After the race, the number 13 rebellion, which had achieved third place overall, was disqualified because the homologated engine cover had been modified during the race. The Orecas engine could no longer be started by the driver, whereupon the team drilled a hole in the body to make it easier to get to the starter. Before that, it was necessary to remove the entire engine cover after every pit stop.
As a result of the disqualification, Jackie Chan DC Racing's start number 37 moved up to third place overall and gave the team a double victory in the LMP2 class.
The drivers of the LMGT Pro class offered the spectators a special spectacle. In the end, Jonny Adam in the Aston Martin Vantage GTE with the number 96 and Jordan Taylor in the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R with the number 63 fought a spectacular battle for class victory. After a driving time of 23 hours and 15 minutes, both cars returned to the track almost simultaneously after the last pit stop, with Jordan Taylor in the Chevrolet leading the way with a few meters. For laps, the two cars were a little more than a second apart on the track. The duel was decided by the more worn tires of the Chevrolet. On the penultimate lap Taylor braked before the second chicane of the Hunaudieres straight, drove at full speed across the meadow and thus managed a lead of a few seconds over the Aston Martin on the edge of the regulations. In the Ford chicane, before the start of the last lap, Adam then passed his opponent. In the last few kilometers, Taylor's car had a damage to the left front tire and lost second place in the final meters to the Ford with the number 67 of Andy Priaulx , Harry Tincknell and Luís Felipe Derani .
After the race
In the days after the race, criticism spread around the appearance of Toyota. The representation of the Toyota team management about the failure of Kobayashi was increasingly doubted in the professional world. The exit from the pit lane has been regulated by traffic lights for many years. Why the Le Mans-experienced Kobayashi should have followed the instructions of a marshal was just as unclear as the mistake of the racing driver Vincent Capillaire for another post. The images show that Capillaire - the Algarve Pro Racing box was at the end of the pit lane - fully equipped with helmet, HANS system and gloves, waiting for the Toyota driver to put his thumb in the right hand of the Toyota driver Height stretched. Capillaire apologized for his gesture, and the Toyota team management accepted the apology.
Toyota development chief Hisatake Murata questioned the use of the third car. The number 9 car was a waste, because Lapierre attacked at a point where he shouldn't have attacked and was then hit from behind. Murata also criticized the team management's decision to re-engage the French racing driver. Lapierre had already gambled away a possible victory in the TS040 Hybrid in 2014 after a driving error.
Akio Toyoda , the CEO of Toyota , questioned the use of hybrid technology at all. While hybrid technology is proving its capabilities in the FIA World Endurance Championship competition in the 6-hour races, it seems that it is not yet ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
On July 10th, four weeks after the race, Toyota team director Rob Leupen exercised self-criticism and provided explanations of the reasons for the defect and failure. In the car with the number eight, in contrast to Porsche, the decision was made to replace both the drive unit and the battery. A screw that was not secured with adhesive as intended had loosened, destroyed a gear and caused consequential damage to the unit. The batteries were also replaced for safety reasons. The repair took 1 hour and 57 minutes, almost twice as long as at Porsche. Leupen also commented on the failure of number 7: Everything has been said and written about it. There was a communication problem between the driver and his race engineer. That sort of thing seems to only happen to us . The failure of the number nine was also mentioned. Leupen described the collision between Lapierre and Trummer as a classic racing accident: This is proven by the TV images and our own. Among other things, the gearbox housing was damaged by the impact. Because the case cannot be changed, we had to take the # 9 out of the race .
