Jumbo is a supermarket chain from the Netherlands of Jumbo Groep Holding BV, which belongs to Stichting Administratiekantoor Van Eerd Groep Holding . With a market share of 21%, it is the second largest grocery retailer in the Netherlands. About 85,000 people worked there in 2020. Jumbo opened its first store in Belgium in 2019 .

history

Jan and Anita Meurs opened the first Jumbo branch on October 18, 1979 in a former church in Tilburg . The name comes from the elephant Jumbo , an allusion to the competitor supermarket "Torro", which belonged to the Van Eerd Group. In 1983 Van Eerd bought the Jumbo branch from the Meurs and ensured consistent expansion into the southern regions of the Netherlands.

Jumbo has only existed in its current form since 1996. Jumbo also published its “7 Guarantees” that year, promising, among other things, that they would have the best selection at the lowest prices. Since the opening of the Valthermond branch in the province of Drenthe in October 2005, Jumbo has been represented in all provinces of the Netherlands. On January 1, 2006, all Jumbo stores had a combined market share of 3.4% in the Netherlands. On May 23, 2007, the 100th Jumbo supermarket was opened in Veghel.

Between 2005 and 2012, Jumbo became the second largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands after Albert Heijn , partly due to the takeover of the supermarket chains Super de Boer in 2009 and C1000 in 2012. In January 2015, the 500th branch was opened in Woerden . In 2018, EMTÉ was taken over by Jumbo and Coop , which further increased the market share.

The head office and main warehouse is located in Veghel . Jumbo has six regional warehouses: Beilen , Breda , Den Bosch , Elst , Raalte and Woerden.

On November 6, 2019, the company expanded to Belgium and opened the first Belgian branch in Pelt , Limburg. The company is said to have good opportunities in Belgium and has already announced that it will continue to expand in Flanders .
