Joey Hand (born February 10, 1979 in Sacramento , California ) is an American racing driver . He won the Star Mazda Series in 1999 and won the Daytona 24-hour race in 2011 . From 2006 to 2012 he competed in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). He also competed in the DTM from 2012 to 2014 .

Career

Hand began his motorsport career in karting in 1991 , where he was active until 1996. In addition, he made his debut in 1996 in the US SCCA Formula Mazda in Formula racing . In 1998 he competed in the Star Mazda West Coast . He won a race and finished fourth in the championship. In 1999 he competed in the Star Mazda Series and became the first champion of this racing series. In 2000, Hand recovered from an accident that he suffered in a kart race. He only entered one race in the Barber Dodge Pro Series . In addition, he took part in the Formula Palmer Audi winter series in Europe and finished sixth.

In 2001 Hand switched to the Atlantic Championship and started for DSTP Motorsports . Hand won two races and finished the championship in third place. In 2002, Hand only took part in half the Atlantic Championship season. The other half of the season was Buddy Rice . Hand achieved the best placement for the team with a third place and finished the season in twelfth championship place. 2003 Hand contested the full season for DSTP Motorsports again. With a second place as the best result, he finished the season in seventh place in the championship.

In 2004, Hand did not find a full-time cockpit in formula racing and finally put his main focus on GT racing. He started in the Rolex Sports Car Series . He won the GT classification once and finished the season in sixth place in the GT classification. He also completed three single- posto races: He competed twice in the US Formula BMW and once in the Atlantic Championship. In 2005 he won the GT classification four times in the Rolex Sports Car Series and finished the season fourth in the GT classification.

In 2006, Hand focused on his involvement in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). With three podium finishes in the GT2 class, he took seventh place in the GT2 classification. He also took part in four races in the Rolex Sports Car Series. In 2007 he finished 22nd in the GT2 classification of the American Le Mans Series. He also made his debut in the DP class of the Rolex Sports Car Series and took part in three races. He also competed in two races in the SCCA World Challenge and one race in the GT classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series. In 2008, Hand completed the entire season in the DP classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series and was 13th with a podium finish. He also took part in the GT2 class of the ALMS four times. In 2009 Hand started the Grand-Am Koni Challenge and finished 15th in the GS classification with a win. He also took part in the ALMS in a BMW M3 E92 . He won the GT2 class once and was 20th in this class.

In 2010, Hand was active in three racing series in a BMW . Together with his team-mate Dirk Müller , he once won the ALMS GT classification and was seventh in this classification. In addition, with two victories he was third in the GS classification of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and he won the GT classification of the Rolex Sports Car Series once. In 2011 Hand remained active in all three racing series. For Chip Ganassi Racing , he won the Daytona 24-hour race in a Riley BMW . In addition, Hand and his teammate Dirk Müller won the ALMS GT classification with three classification wins. Hand also made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2011 . He took part in a BMW M3 GT2 together with Dirk Müller and Andy Priaulx and was 15th in the overall and third in the LMGTE-Pro classification.

In 2012 Hand competed with BMW in the DTM . He drove for Reinhold Motorsport and was a team mate of the reigning champion Martin Tomczyk . While his brand colleague Bruno Spengler won the championship title, Hand, as the worst BMW driver, was 20th overall. At the same time, Hand stayed for another season with BMW in the ALMS, but no longer competed in every race. He won in the GT class at the season opener and finished seventh in the GT classification. He also took part in the Daytona 24-hour race again, finishing in sixth place. In 2013 , Hand switched to Racing Bart Mampaey (RBM) within the BMW DTM teams . At the end of the season he was twelfth overall. He drove six races in the ALMS and was on the podium twice in the GT class. He also took part in two races in the Rolex Sports Car Series. In 2014 hand in the DTM stayed with RBM. At the end of the season he finished 20th in the overall ranking. In addition, he contested three races in the GTLM class of the newly founded United SportsCar Championship (USCC).
