Pro Mazda Championship
The Pro Mazda Championship ( Star Mazda Series until 2012 ) is an American monoposto racing series, which is primarily intended as a newcomer. The races of the series are often held as part of the supporting program of larger events, such as the races of the IndyCar Series . Initially the series consisted of six divisions, all of which only held their own championship in certain parts of the USA . In the meantime, these divisions have been combined into a series. The series is part of the Road to Indy system of the IndyCar Series.
It is a racing series in which many parts of the vehicle are prescribed by the regulations, so that the cars on the track are almost the same and it depends on the driver. The cars are made by Race Cars of Pacoima, CA , the engines are from Mazda . The vehicles were built in such a way that they are comparatively cheap, which means that teams can use this series for their entry into formula racing. Since the 2006 season, the season opening race was held in Sebring , Florida , one day before the Sebring 12-hour race .
The series is considered a springboard for talented racing drivers. For example, drivers like Scott Speed , Marco Andretti and Michael McDowell managed to advance to higher motor sport classes through the series.
