Scott Andrew Speed (born January 24, 1983 in Manteca , California ) is an American racing driver . He started in Formula 1 in 2006 and 2007 and was most recently active in NASCAR .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

Scott Speed's career began at the age of 12 in karting , which he engaged in from 1995 to 2000, before advancing to the Formula Series in 2001 and becoming the US Formula Russell Champion. He drove both in the US Barber Formula Dodge and in the 2002 Star Mazda Series . In 2003 he started for the ADR team in the British Formula 3 . In 2004 Scott Speed won two championship titles: the first in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup and the second in the German Formula Renault .

Due to his good performances he was able to drive in the opening season of the GP2 series in 2005 as number two for the iSport team next to Can Artam , later he became the team's first driver. He contested a total of 13 races, achieved a pole position and finished the season with 67.5 points in third behind Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen . During the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix , Scott Speed worked as a test driver for Red Bull Racing and became the first US driver since Michael Andretti to take part in a Formula 1 weekend again. Scott Speed also drove for Team USA in the A1GP racing series in the same year .

formula 1

Speed at the 2006 Canadian GP

After Red Bull Racing took over Minardi , they announced the creation of Scuderia Toro Rosso with Scott Speed and Vitantonio Liuzzi as drivers. At the 2006 Australian Grand Prix , he was the eighth driver to cross the finish line and initially scored a World Championship point for Scuderia Toro Rosso. This placement was later revoked because he had overtaken during one of the numerous safety car phases. Eighth place (and thus the world championship point) was awarded to David Coulthard , the first driver of the parent team Red Bull Racing. Since Scott Speed abused Coulthard at the trial, he also had to pay a fine of $ 5000.

Speed ended the season with no points and it was questionable for a long time whether he would also drive in Formula 1 in 2007 . After tests by Sébastien Bourdais , Speed was only confirmed shortly before the start of the season as the second driver alongside Liuzzi - apparently a measure that Toro Rosso hoped that Speed would improve in 2007.

Nevertheless, Speed continued to struggle with the difficult to drive car. After the European Grand Prix , where he slipped off the track in the rain like his team-mate Liuzzi, who had to complain about a mechanical defect, there was a dispute with team principal Franz Tost. According to Speed, Tost rammed his fist in the back and pushed him against a wall.

After this incident there was no longer any basis for cooperation. After much speculation in the trade press Toro Rosso announced on 31 July 2007 that Scott Speed from the Hungarian Grand Prix by the former test driver for BMW Sauber , Sebastian Vettel will be replaced.

NASCAR

In 2007, Speed made his stockcar debut in the ARCA Racing Series in preparation for his NASCAR career . On April 26, 2008, he won his first stock car victory in the ARCA RE / MAX Series race at Kansas Speedway . Three more wins followed, so Speed had a chance to win the championship. In the course of the last race of the season there was a collision with championship contender Ricky Stenhouse jr. As a result, Speed rammed Stenhouse Jr. intentionally. For this he had to put up with harsh criticism from the ranks of NASCAR and ARCA.

In addition to his ARCA involvement, Speed also took part in races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series . On May 30, 2008, he won the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover International Speedway in his sixth start in this series .

In the 2009 season , Speed began as a full-time driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup , the highest NASCAR division. However, the season was without any highlights, Speed only achieved a top 10 position once. In the overall driver standings it was only 35th place. In the 2010 season , too, his performance did not improve significantly, so that he only achieved 30th place overall. Because of the poor performance, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season.

In 2011, Speed signed a deal with Dragon Racing for the Indianapolis 500 , but was unable to qualify for the race due to technical problems. In July of the same year he made his comeback in the NASCAR Sprint Cup at the Brickyard 400 .

Formula E.

In 2015 , Speed competed in the Miami ePrix of the FIA Formula E Championship for Andretti Autosport . With a second place he immediately achieved a podium position and was also used in the next three races.

Personal

Scott Speed currently resides in Mount Holly , North Carolina .
