Since 1967, with the exception of 1975, 1987 and 2009, a Formula 1 World Championship race has been held in Canada as the Grand Prix of Canada . Before that, sports car races had already taken place under the same name : From 1961 to 1965 as part of the Canadian Sports Car Championship and 1966 in the CanAm series.

The first Canadian Grand Prix in Formula 1 was held at Mosport Park , around 100 km east of Toronto , in the 1967 season, where the sports car races, also known as the Canadian Grand Prix, had previously taken place. In 1968 and 1970 the race took place on the Mont-Tremblant circuit near the town of Saint-Jovite in the province of Québec . In 1969 and from 1971 to 1977 Mosport Park was again the venue for the Grand Prix of Canada. From 1978, the Formula 1 races took place on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve (known as Circuit Île Notre-Dame until 1981 ) in Montreal . At the Canadian Grand Prix in 1982, the Italian racing driver Riccardo Paletti was killed in a rear-end collision in the start-finish area.

For the 2009 Formula 1 season , the Canadian Grand Prix was not included in the racing calendar. The reason given by Formula 1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone was that the operators of the track still owe payments for past races. The organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix contradicted this, but admitted that there are different views on the level of their obligations. Rescue attempts with the participation of the city of Montreal and the Canadian government ultimately failed because one could not agree with Ecclestone on payments for future races.

The 2011 Canadian Grand Prix on June 12, 2011 was the longest (4: 04: 39.537 h) and also the slowest (average speed 74.864 km / h) race in Formula 1 history. The cause was heavy rain and several accidents that led to a total of 30 safety car laps (also a record).

The race was canceled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
