Charles Leclerc (pronunciation: ʃaʁl ləklɛʁ ; born October 16, 1997 in Monte Carlo ) is a Monegasque automobile racing driver . He won the GP3 series in 2016 and the FIA Formula 2 championship in 2017 . He has been driving in Formula 1 since 2018 .

origin

Leclerc's father Hervé Leclerc, who was also a racing driver and u. a. drove in Formula 3 in the 1980s , died in 2017 at the age of 54. Charles Leclerc trained on the Philippe Bianchi go-kart track in Brignoles . He was friends with his eight-year-old son Jules Bianchi , who was also a racing driver and who died in an accident in July 2015. When Leclerc's grandparents, who were plastic producers, ran into economic problems in 2010 and the financing of Leclerc's career was in jeopardy, his father Bianchi found him sponsors. Leclerc has two brothers. His younger brother Arthur is also a racing driver. Charles Leclerc speaks French, Italian and English.

Career

Karting (2005-2013)

Leclerc began his motorsport career in karting in 2005 , where he remained active until 2013. In 2009 he became the youngest winner of the French kart championship in the Cadet class. In 2010 he won the KF3 class of the Monaco Kart Cup as the youngest driver to date. In 2011 Leclerc achieved overall victories in the CIK-FIA World Cup of the KF3 and in the CIK-FIA Kart Academy Trophy. In 2012 he won the KF2 category of the WSK Euro Series and came second in the KF2 class of the CIK-FIA European Card Championship and in the U18 CIK-FIA Kart World Championship. In 2013, Leclerc competed in the concentration camp class of the European and World Championships. While he reached sixth place in the European Championship, he was second behind Max Verstappen in the World Championship.

Formula Renault and Formula 3 (2014-2015)

In 2014 Leclerc switched to Formula Racing at Fortec Motorsports in Formula Renault . He won two races and achieved a total of nine podium finishes. With 199 to 300 points, he finished the season in second place behind Nyck de Vries . In addition, Leclerc made six guest starts with Fortec in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . He finished in second place three times. In 2015 Leclerc received a cockpit in the European Formula 3 championship at Van Amersfoort Racing . Already at the first race weekend at Silverstone he achieved his first victory. He also won in Hockenheim , Spa-Francorchamps and Nuremberg . As the best driver of his team, he achieved fourth place in the drivers' championship.

GP3 series (2016)

In 2016 Leclerc switched to the ART Grand Prix in the GP3 series . He won the season opener in Barcelona and the main races in Spielberg and Spa-Francorchamps. He was on the podium in a total of eight races. With 202 to 177 points he prevailed against his teammate Alexander Albon and won the championship. In addition, Leclerc was accepted into the Scuderia Ferrari funding program in 2016 . In this role he completed Formula 1 test drives for Ferrari and Haas .

Formula 2 (2017)

In 2017 Leclerc received a cockpit in the FIA Formula 2 championship at Prema Racing . He won one race each in as-Sachir , Barcelona, Baku , Spielberg and Silverstone . With another victory in the main race in Jerez , he won the championship on the penultimate race weekend. He also remained a Formula 1 test driver and completed test drives for Ferrari and Sauber .

Formula 1 (since 2018)

Clean (2018)

In 2018 Leclerc became a regular driver at Sauber in the Formula 1 World Championship . He chose # 16 as his permanent starting number. In his debut race in Australia he was 13th. At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix , he scored his first points in the Formula 1 World Championship in sixth place. He is also the first Monegasque driver since Louis Chiron 1950 to score points in a race for the Formula 1 World Championship. At the French Grand Prix he qualified eighth for the first time in the top 10 for the race. He achieved a total of ten points. At the end of the season he finished 13th overall with 39 points.

Ferrari (since 2019)

In 2019 , Leclerc swapped cockpit with Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen and became Sebastian Vettel's new team-mate . At the season opener in Australia he was fifth behind Vettel, but was not allowed to overtake his teammate because of a team order. At the following Grand Prix of Bahrain he was the first Monegasse to achieve a pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship. In the race, Leclerc suffered a technical defect in the drive while in the lead, so that he slowed down and fell back to third by the end of the race. It was his first podium finish in the Formula 1 World Championship. In Canada and France he was again third. At the Austrian Grand Prix , Leclerc was in the lead for a long time before he was overtaken by Max Verstappen shortly before the end of the race and finished in second place. This was followed by another podium finish with third place in Great Britain . He won his first Formula 1 race in Belgium as the first Monegasse and the youngest Ferrari driver ever. Leclerc then won the home race of his team in Italy as the first Ferrari driver since 2010. This was followed by a second place in Singapore and a third in Russia . At the season finale in Abu Dhabi , he was back on the podium in third place. There was a hearing after the race because irregularities were found in the amount of fuel in his vehicle. The team received a fine of 50,000 euros. He finished the season in fourth place overall with 264 points, which is his best result in Formula 1.

On December 23, 2019 it was announced that Leclerc had extended his contract with Ferrari until 2024.

2020

In spring 2020 , he took part in the official virtual Formula 1 races, which took place instead of the races that were canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic , and won the Virtual Grand Prix of Australia and China. In addition, it was announced in May that he would be with Carlos Sainz jr. gets a new teammate.

At the first race, the Austrian Grand Prix , the outcome of which was influenced by numerous failures, he finished second. In the following race, the Styria GP , he retired after a collision with teammate Vettel on the first lap. At the Grand Prix of Great Britain , he was third and benefited from a puncture at the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas . After the seventh race, he is currently fifth in the drivers' standings with 45 points.

Others

On May 24, 2020, a remake of the short film " C'etait un Rendezvous " was shot in Monaco . Charles Leclerc played the main role. In the film, the racing driver mostly drove in a Ferrari SF90 Stradale at high speed through the streets of Monaco, which were cordoned off for filming.

In the same year he took part in the virtual Le Mans 24-hour race . In the GT class he drove with u. a. Antonio Giovinazzi the Ferrari 488 GTE with the number # 52 for the AF Corse team. In the meantime he was in fourth class, but technical problems threw the car back. In the end, Leclerc and his teammates finished 46th overall. Nonetheless, in an interview after the race, he announced that he would at some point also want to contest the real Le Mans 24-hour race .
