backgrounds

After the Austrian Grand Prix , Valtteri Bottas led the drivers' standings by seven points over Charles Leclerc and nine points over Lando Norris . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with eleven points ahead of McLaren and with 18 points ahead of Ferrari .

As part of the Grand Prix of Styria, a second race was held on a track for the first time in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship within one season. A week earlier, the Austrian Grand Prix took place on the same racetrack.

At the Styrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available. For logistical reasons, all drivers received the same number of sets of tires in the respective degrees of hardness; it was not possible to place different orders. Each driver thus had eight sets of the soft , three sets of the medium and two sets of the hard mix.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Styrian Grand Prix took place under strict safety and hygiene rules. No spectators were allowed, and every person who was in the paddock had to be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least every five days .

Since the Grand Prix of Styria was held for the first time, no former winner entered this Grand Prix. Max Verstappen , Bottas (twice each) and Lewis Hamilton (once) have won the Austrian Grand Prix in the past , which was also held at the Red Bull Ring.

Race stewards were Gerd Ennser (DEU), Felix Holter (DEU), Walter Jobst (AUT) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

free training

In the first free practice, Sergio Pérez set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 04.867 minutes, ahead of Verstappen and Bottas.

In the second free practice session, Verstappen set the fastest time in 1: 03.660 minutes ahead of Bottas and Pérez. The training was interrupted for around ten minutes after an accident by Daniel Ricciardo .

The third free practice session was canceled due to heavy rain.

Qualifying

After the track had largely dried out before qualifying, it started raining heavier again a few minutes before the scheduled start. The start of qualifying was therefore postponed by 45 minutes.

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Training was stopped a few seconds before the end after Antonio Giovinazzi parked his vehicle on the side of the track after an accident. Hamilton was fastest. Grosjean did not complete a timed lap due to a problem with the cooling of his energy storage and did not qualify for the race. Besides him, the Alfa Romeo drivers, Nicholas Latifi and Sergio Pérez were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, everyone else had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Since the qualifying was held in the rain, this obligation was not applicable. Hamilton was again fastest. Kevin Magnussen , Daniil Kwjat , Lance Stroll , George Russell and Leclerc were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the best time with a lap time of 1: 19.273 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. It was the 89th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Norris was moved back three starting positions for disregarding yellow flags in free practice. Leclerc was also moved three places back because he had hindered Kwjat. Grosjean had to start from the pit lane after his team broke the parc fermé conditions in order to repair his car after qualifying.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. It was the 85th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. The remaining points were placed by Alexander Albon , Norris, Pérez, Stroll, Ricciardo, Sainz and Kwjat. As Sainz set the fastest race lap and finished the race in the top ten, he received an additional point.

Bottas remained in the lead in the drivers' championship, Hamilton was now second ahead of Norris. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes extended its lead over McLaren, with Red Bull Racing now taking third place .
