Emanuele Pirro (born January 12, 1962 in Rome ) is a former Italian racing driver .
Career
Pirro made his entry into motorsport in the mid-1970s in karting . In 1976 and 1979 he became the Italian kart champion. In the following years he rose through Formula 3 , Formula 2 , Formula 3000 and various touring car championships in 1988 with McLaren- Honda as a test driver in Formula 1 .
Pirro had already tried in 1987 to compete in Formula 1 with the British Middlebridge-Trussardi team ; however, the project was not allowed to start. In 1989 Pirro had his first Formula 1 season for Benetton- Ford. In the next two years he started for the Italian team BMS Scuderia Italia . In total, he was able to qualify for 37 Grand Prix starts and scored three World Championship points. His best Formula 1 World Championship placement was 18th in the 1991 season.
In 1992 Pirro switched from formula racing to touring car racing. In 1992 he took part in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) for one season with BMW . This was followed by several successful years in the Italian touring car championship. In 1994 and 1995 he was the overall winner of the series with Audi . In 1996 he moved back to Germany, to the ADAC-STW-Cup. Here, too, he was able to end his first season with an overall victory.
In 1999 Pirro took part in his first Le Mans 24-hour race with an Audi R8 . In the three following years he was able to win the race with his teammates Tom Kristensen and Frank Biela .
In 2004 he started alongside Frank Biela for Team Joest in an Audi A4 in the DTM .
In 2006 and 2007, together with Frank Biela (D) and Marco Werner (D), he won the Le Mans 24-hour race (24 Heures du Mans) in an Audi R10 TDI for a fourth and fifth time.
