Reports
background
Alain Prost announced in the run-up to his home Grand Prix that he would be transferring to Scuderia Ferrari after the end of the current season . McLaren then took Gerhard Berger for the 1990 season under contract.
With immediate effect Johnny Herbert was fired from Benetton and replaced by Formula 1 newcomer Emanuele Pirro . Éric Bernard also made his Grand Prix debut. The French replaced his compatriot Yannick Dalmas at Larrousse . Due to a new sponsorship agreement had Michele Alboreto his place with Tyrrell in favor of the cigarette brand Camel supported Jean Alesi clear who was thus the third newcomer this weekend. Martin Donnelly expanded the ranks of debutants to a quartet by replacing the injured Derek Warwick at Arrows .
training
The two McLaren drivers qualified for the front row, with Alain Prost taking pole position from Ayrton Senna . Nigel Mansell followed in front of Alessandro Nannini , Thierry Boutsen and Gerhard Berger.
For the first time, Bertrand Gachot made the pre-qualification. In the regular qualification rounds he then achieved a remarkable eleventh starting place with the Onyx ORE-1 .
run
While Senna passed Prost at the front, Maurício Gugelmin hit the rear wheels of Thierry Boutsen and Nigel Mansell before the first corner. His March CG891 overturned and the race was stopped. All the pilots involved in the accident were uninjured and sprinted to the pits to be able to participate in the restart in their T-Cars .
In the course of the restart, Senna retired due to a gearbox damage. As a result, Prost stayed at the top and defended this position until the finish. At first, Berger was behind him in second place. In the twelfth lap, however, he fell behind Nannini and Boutsen. However, none of these three pilots made it to the finish line. Because of their failures, Ivan Capelli and then Jean Alesi came in second for a few laps. This was taken in round 48 by Riccardo Patrese . At the beginning of the last quarter of the race he was eventually ousted from this position by Mansell.
Jean Alesi took a strong fourth place on his debut. Stefan Johansson also showed a good performance as fifth in the actually inferior Onyx , as did Olivier Grouillard, who came in sixth for the first and only time.
