Gregor Foitek (born March 27, 1965 in Zurich ) is a former Swiss automobile racing driver . He is the son of Karl Foitek .

Career

After Foitek became champion of the Swiss Formula 3 series in 1986 , he was promoted to Formula 3000 that same year . There, too, he repeatedly achieved good placings, including a victory at the Vallelunga race in 1988 , so that he was able to finish the 1988 season with seventh place in the overall standings.

Thanks to these solid performances, Foitek was able to secure a driver's place in Formula 1 for the following year 1989 at the defeated EuroBrun racing team from Italy . Since he did not qualify for a single race there, however, he was replaced by Oscar Larrauri at the Italian Grand Prix . After two races without the driver's seat, he joined the Spanish Grand Prix at the German team Rial Racing in place of Christian Danner , however, was after a Grand Prix from the Belgian Bertrand Gachot replaced.

Despite this unsuccessful debut season, in which he had not participated in a single race, Foitek was given the opportunity in 1990 to drive with the better-positioned Brabham team . However, the contract was limited to the first two races of the year, and Foitek was required to pay the team an amount of CHF 200,000 for each race. Foitek qualified for both races but couldn't finish either. Another commitment of the Swiss made Brabham dependent on additional payments that Foitek could not make in the required amount.

In order to secure a cockpit for Foitek in Formula 1 in the future, his father Karl Foitek and the Swiss businessman Peter Monteverdi bought the British team Onyx in March 1990 , which had recently failed due to political and economic problems. For the third race of the season, Gregor Foitek then took over Stefan Johansson's Onyx cockpit; his teammate became JJ Lehto . By the summer of 1990, he had reached two finishings with the increasingly outdated Onyx ORE-1B - the only ones in his Formula 1 career - but remained outside the points. Foitek's best result was seventh in Monaco . When the team did not develop positively and the cars were not being properly maintained, Karl Foitek withdrew his support from the team in August 1990 and Gregor Foitek terminated his contract with Monteverdi. As a result, Onyx-Monteverdi stopped Formula 1 operations before the Belgian Grand Prix .

A few days after separating from Monteverdi, Gregor Foitek also severed business relationships with his father, who had looked after him as a manager and supported him financially for many years. In the period that followed, Gregor Foitek was no longer able to get a driver's seat in Formula 1.

After his Formula 1 career, Foitek competed in two races in the US Champ Car series in 1992 , both of which he had to end with technical defects. Foitek last drew attention to himself in 2002 when he took part in the Ferrari Challenge . After his racing career ended, he began selling luxury vehicles.
