Reports
background
The only change compared to the Italian Grand Prix two weeks earlier was the fact that Team Life converted its car from its own engines to a Judd unit . However, no timed lap was completed for pre-qualification.
Jean Alesi's move to Ferrari for the following season was officially announced after Alessandro Nannini's signing failed. Alesi had originally also signed a contract with Williams . The British team asked for a Formula 1 car from Ferrari as compensation.
training
To the surprise of the professional world, neither of the two McLaren drivers qualified for the front row, but Ferrari team-mates Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost . The favorites Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger followed in the second row in front of Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet .
run
After an accident during the warm-up , Satoru Nakajima decided not to take part in the race.
Mansell started badly and almost spun. Since Prost had to evade, Senna, Berger and Piquet pulled past him. Mansell was just able to defend third place against Piquet.
Only in the 13th lap was Prost able to overtake Piquet. At this point he was around five seconds behind the leading trio. He needed another 13 laps to catch up with his team-mate Mansell and overtake him.
After most of the drivers had made a pit stop to change tires, Senna was in the lead ahead of Mansell, Berger, Prost, Nannini and Piquet. On the 50th lap, Mansell took over the top position from Senna. At Prost, the sixth gear had meanwhile failed, so that he was worried about being able to finish the race at all. In the course of a lapping maneuver, Nigel Mansell collided with Philippe Alliot . While he was eliminated, the leader was able to continue the race almost unaffected.
Despite the defective gearbox, Prost passed Berger on lap 59 and quickly caught up with Senna, who placed second. Then the race was stopped prematurely ten laps before the planned end due to a collision between Alex Caffi and Aguri Suzuki , as the recovery of Caffi turned out to be complicated. Thus Mansell won ahead of Senna, Prost, Berger, Piquet and Nannini.
Ayrton Senna started the last three races of the year with a lead of 18 championship points over Alain Prost.
