Reports
background
As a result of the collision with Alain Prost provoked by Ayrton Senna two weeks earlier, shortly after the start of the Japanese Grand Prix , Scuderia Ferrari , threatening to withdraw from Formula 1 , demanded new rules from FISA to avoid dangerous collisions and appropriate penalties for violations.
The final run in Australia was the 500th Grand Prix in Formula 1 history. The field of participants remained unchanged compared to the Japanese GP.
training
The two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger secured the front row in front of the two Ferrari 641s driven by Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost. Jean Alesi followed before Riccardo Patrese and the two Benetton team- mates Nelson Piquet and Roberto Moreno .
run
First Berger was able to defend second place behind the leading Senna against Mansell. In the second round, however, he accidentally turned the ignition on his engine. While he was correcting this, Mansell was able to get past him.
By the ninth lap, Piquet passed Prost and Berger into third place. Up to the 43rd lap, Mansell dueled Senna for the lead. Then he fell back to fifth as a result of a small driving error and a pit stop.
When Senna had to retire on lap 62 due to a gearbox failure, Piquet took the lead from Prost, Mansell and Berger. On lap 73 Mansell passed Prost and caught up with the leader. However, this defended his position to the finish. Mansell was second, around three seconds behind, ahead of Prost, Berger, Boutsen and Patrese.
