The 1988 Australian Grand Prix took place on November 13th as the 16th and final race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship on the Adelaide Street Circuit .
Reports
background
Before the last Formula 1 race for the time being, in which turbo engines were permitted, the world championship had already been decided in favor of Ayrton Senna and McLaren . Meanwhile, the team had to defend itself against an allegation by FISA President Jean-Marie Balestre that his compatriot Alain Prost had been disadvantaged in the fight for the world title.
training
Ayrton Senna achieved his 13th pole position of the year on the 16th race weekend. As so often, Alain Prost followed in second place on the grid. Behind them, in his last race for Williams for the time being , Nigel Mansell and his future Ferrari team- mate Gerhard Berger formed the second row in front of Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese , who this weekend set the then valid record of Jacques Laffite with 176 Grand Prix participations .
run
Since Senna started badly, Prost took the lead. In the duel for second place against Senna, Mansell slightly misjudged himself, so that Berger and Piquet could overtake him. Michele Alboreto and Alex Caffi collided further down the field .
The first phase of the race was dominated by Berger, who overtook Senna on the third lap and gradually reduced the gap to Prost. He overtook it on lap 14. However, Berger had been driving with full turbo boost pressure from the start and the high fuel consumption would not have allowed him to finish the race. This was in line with Ferrari's strategy of giving the fans a good show in order to remain competitive with the McLaren until they were eliminated. When trying to lap René Arnoux , Berger provoked a collision with him and retired, whereby Prost came back to the top on lap 26, which he then defended to the finish. More than half a minute behind, Senna crossed the finish line in second place, ahead of Piquet. Riccardo Patrese was fourth ahead of Thierry Boutsen and Ivan Capelli .
McLaren ended the 1988 season with a 15th win in the 16th race. Ten of the successes came in the form of one-two victories.
