Prom at the Palace
Prom at the Palace was a classical concert , which on 1 June 2002 on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee (Golden Jubilee) of Elizabeth II. Took place. The venue was the garden of Buckingham Palace in London . The concert marked the beginning of the Golden Jubilee Weekend , the main celebrations of the anniversary. The name is reminiscent of the summer concert series The Proms in the Royal Albert Hall .
The two-hour concert took place in the presence of the royal family in front of 12,000 spectators who had been drawn from among two million interested people. Another 40,000 spectators followed the concert on The Mall on big screens, and it was also broadcast on television in over 40 countries. It was the first event of its kind to be held on the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The recording of the concert was later published on CD , the television pictures on DVD .
Conducted by Andrew Davis , the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Marines Orchestra played , accompanied by the BBC Symphony Chorus. Guest singers included Roberto Alagna , Thomas Allen , Angela Gheorghiu and Kiri Te Kanawa . Mstislav Rostropovich appeared as a cello soloist , while Roberto Bolle showed a dance performance choreographed by Anthony Dowell . Works by Giuseppe Verdi , Giacomo Puccini , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Gioachino Rossini , Peter Tschaikowski , George Gershwin , Georges Bizet , Edward Elgar and Georg Friedrich Handel were performed .
Two days later, on June 3rd, the Party at the Palace , a pop and rock concert , also took place at the same location . On the occasion of the diamond jubilee ten years later, there was another concert on the square in front of Buckingham Palace, the Diamond Jubilee Concert .
