Sir Thomas Boaz Allen , CBE (born September 10, 1944 in Seaham Harbor ) is an English opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Thomas Boaz Allen studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1964 to 1968. In 1969 he made his debut at the Welsh Opera, and in 1971 at Covent Garden , of which he is still a member. A rapid world career followed, and since 1981 Allen has also sung regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and at the Houston Grand Opera . In addition to London and New York, he is primarily at home at the Bavarian National Theater in Munich. There are also regular appearances at the Salzburg Festival , the Glyndebourne Festival and the Munich Opera Festival .

His repertoire includes over 40 roles, particularly those of the lyrical and cavalier baritone disciplines. He sang the title role in Don Giovanni , Count Almaviva in Figaro's Wedding and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte by Mozart particularly often . In March 2019 he said goodbye with Don Alfonso from the Royal Opera House in London.

He also appears regularly in recitals, for example at Wigmore Hall and Snape Maltings.

Allen is one of the best-known classical singers in Great Britain and, in addition to his appearances, is making increasing efforts to promote and train young talent. In 1999 he was ennobled for his commitment. In October 2011, he was elected Chancellor ( Chancellor , a mainly ceremonial office) of the prestigious University of Durham to succeed the author Bill Bryson . He took up this position in January 2012.

Allen now also works as a director.
