Seaham (formerly Seaham Harbor ) is a town in County Durham . It is located about 10 kilometers south of Sunderland and about 21 kilometers east of Durham .

history

The original settlement in the urban area no longer exists today. It was north of today's city center between St Mary's Church and Seaham Hall. Until the early 19th century, the city was very agricultural. On January 2, 1815, Anne married Isabella Milbanke , the daughter of a landowner, Lord Byron in Seaham Town Hall. Byron wrote parts of his book Hebrew Melodies in Seaham. From there he wrote to a friend:

“Upon this dreary coast we have nothing but county meetings and shipwrecks; and I have this day dined upon fish, which probably dined upon the crews of several colliers lost in the late gales. But I saw the sea once more in all the glories of surf and foam. "

“On this oh-so-barren coast there is nothing but council meetings and shipwrecks; today I ate fish, which probably recently ate the crew of various coal ships that were lost in past storms. But I experienced the sea again in all its splendor of waves and spray. "

The marriage, though short-lived, had a negative impact on the Milbanke family's estates. In 1828 the Milbankes finally sold the rest of their property to Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry . This built a port to ensure the removal of coal, which was mined in the area from 1845, as well as other industrially manufactured products. Over time, however, the amount of coal increased so much that the port was no longer able to cope with the demands. Therefore Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 6th Marquess of Londonderry commissioned the engineers Patrick Meik and Charles Meik with the expansion of the harbor basin. The expansion was completed in 1905. From a technical point of view, the port is still of interest today because it consists of a series of interconnected locks .

In 1823 the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry approached the architect John Dobson to design a plan for a town around the harbor. However, the construction initially failed because insufficient funds were available. Nevertheless, the city grew bit by bit. Because of its location, the city was initially called "Seaham Harbor". Over time it was called "Seaham".

In 1928 the last of a total of three coal mines was opened in the city of Seahams. By 1992, all funding agencies had to be closed because they were no longer profitable. The entire region was badly affected.

On November 17, 1962, a Royal National Lifeboat Institution boat sank off Seaham. In memory of the eight crew members who were killed, a street on the coast was named after the ship.

politics

The constituency has been represented by a member of the Labor Party since 1922 . From 1929 to 1935, then Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald was an MP for the constituency. In the British general election in 2010 , Grahame Morris was elected to the House of Commons with 14,982 votes.

The parish church of Seaham is the Blessed Virgin Mary consecrated. The building dates back to the late 7th century. The nave is built in the Anglo-Saxon style. The church is one of the 20 oldest churches in the United Kingdom.

Seaham Hall , the city's former town hall, is now a luxury hotel and spa . The Londonderry Institute building on Tempest Road was designed by Thomas Oliver in 1853 . The portico built in the Greek style is particularly striking . The Londonderry Offices building is a little younger. The building complex, located directly on the coast, previously served as the headquarters of the family of the Marquess of Londonderry.
