The Munich Opera Festival is a festival steeped in tradition that attracts opera fans from all over the world. In June and July they are the traditional highlight of the Munich opera year.

Today the festival is organized by the Bavarian State Opera and the Bavarian State Ballet and offers more than 30 opera performances , recitals as well as numerous concerts , ballet productions and many other events in the National Theater , Prinzregententheater , Cuvilliés-Theater , Pavillon 21 MINI Opera Space (2010), the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche as well as the Neue Pinakothek (2010) or the Brandhorst Museum (2010).

The opera festival first took place in 1875 as a festival summer with operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and musical dramas by Richard Wagner . The idea of ​​the festival was so successful that over time the desire for an own festival hall increased, so that the Prinzregententheater was built around the turn of the century to meet the wishes of the citizens - sponsored by the art-loving Prince Regent Luitpold . The opening was on August 21, 1901 with the Meistersinger and ushered in a heyday of the Munich Opera Festival.

In 1952 the Munich Opera Festival was one of the founding organizations of the European Festivals Association . Since 1958, the Association for the Promotion of the Munich Opera Festival has supported the Opera Festival - in addition to financial support, it also receives a festival prize (since 1965) and an extensive annual publication (since 1959 - today under the title “Festival Guide”).

Under the slogan “Opera for everyone”, an opera and a concert evening are presented every year on Max-Joseph-Platz in front of the National Theater . Admission is free, state-of-the-art sound reinforcement technology ensures good sound quality and on June 26, 2010 this event recorded the previous visitor record of 12,000 listeners.
