The Houston Grand Opera is a classical music and musical theater institution in Houston , USA .

history

The Houston Grand Opera was founded in 1955. Performances were held in Jones Hall from 1966 to 1987 , when a new building was erected, the Wortham Center , named after an important patron of the opera, S. Gus Wortham.

For the inauguration of the new venue, the opera Nixon in China was commissioned, which came from the pen of John Adams .
