The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. ( Engl. Diamond Jubilee ) was in 2012 the 60th anniversary of the enthronement of the British Queen Elizabeth II. There were celebrations in all Commonwealth realm instead. Unlike the previous anniversaries when the Queen had paid visits to most of these countries , this time she and her husband Philip, Duke of Edinburgh stayed in Britain and were represented by their children and other family members. The main celebrations took place in London from June 2nd to 5th, 2012 as part of the Diamond Jubilee Weekend . Highlights included the Diamond Jubilee Concert in front of Buckingham Palace and the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant - a parade of over 1,000 craft on the Thames and the largest of its kind in history. Numerous sights, buildings and the like were named in honor of the diamond jubilee.

Preparations

In October 2011, at the Summit of the Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Nations in Perth , Australia , the British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the impending establishment of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust . It was launched on February 6, 2012, the 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne. The foundation, run by former British Prime Minister John Major , was designed to support charitable organizations and projects in the Commonwealth of Nations, with a focus on activities such as fighting disease or promoting culture and education. In February 2012, the Australian prime minister was Julia Gillard announced that her government will 5.4 million AUD contribute to the Trust, the New Zealand government later made a similar commitment in the amount of 1 million NZD .

In the same month, a senior adviser was quoted as saying that the Queen had set two guiding principles for planning the festivities: the use of public funds should be kept as low as possible and no one should be "forced to celebrate". The celebration was largely financed by private donors and sponsors. The HM Treasury wore only the cost of security measures. The logo of the diamond jubilee was determined in a competition on the BBC children's program Blue Peter ; the design by ten-year-old Katherine Dewar won.

On January 5, 2010, was Lord President of the Council Peter Mandelson announced that it has an additional on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 bank holiday (bank holiday) will give. By moving the traditional spring bank holiday (otherwise on the last Monday in May) to Monday, June 4th, there were four consecutive non-working days. Some economists predicted that the gross domestic product could fall 0.5% as a result in the second quarter, but this would be partially offset by higher sales in tourism and trade.

On March 20, 2012, the Queen addressed both Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall . The first international event for the diamond anniversary was the Diamond Jubilee Pageant from May 10th to 13th. It was a series of cavalcades in the courtyard of Windsor Castle . They were under the motto The World Comes to Windsor ("The world is coming to Windsor") and took place as part of the Royal Windsor Horse Show . The numerous state visits by the Queen during her six-decade reign and her love for horses were celebrated. The show consisted of 550 horses and 1100 participants from all over the world, the Queen herself was present at the last performance.

The Queen received over 20 reigning or former monarchs from other countries for lunch at Windsor Castle on May 18. Criticism was raised of the presence of Hamad bin Isa Al Chalifa , King of Bahrain , for suppressing protests against the Bahraini government in 2011. During the event, protesters gathered outside Buckingham Palace. Windsor Castle was on May 19, also the scene of a military parade (Diamond Jubilee Armed Forces Parade and patterns) . All three branches of the British Armed Forces attended this to honor their commanders in chief. Part of the parade was an air show with 78 current and historic aircraft.

On June 2, 2012, Google presented a Google Doodle on its main page , which was composed of the profile of the queen, corgis and diamonds . The following day, June 3rd, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant took place. 1000 vessels from across the Commonwealth took part in this parade on the Thames . It was the largest parade on the river in 350 years and, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest boat and ship parade ever held. Heavy rain set in during the parade, so that the planned accompanying air show had to be canceled due to low clouds and poor visibility. In addition to almost all members of the royal family, various governors-general of the Commonwealth Realms were also present.

Prince Philip was hospitalized on June 4th with a bladder infection and was unable to attend any other celebrations for a while. On the evening of the same day, the area in front of Buckingham Palace was the scene of the Diamond Jubilee Concert . Before this concert with several dozen pop stars and bands, the 10,000 randomly drawn visitors gathered for a picnic in the palace garden. The concert, which was broadcast worldwide on television, was organized by Take That singer Gary Barlow . During that day, several thousand bonfires were lit in numerous Commonwealth of Nations and British overseas territories. The Queen herself lit a fire in front of Buckingham Palace that evening, shortly after the concert.

Members of the Royal Family, Governors General, Prime Ministers of the Commonwealth Realms and 2,000 other guests attended a thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral on June 5th . Will Todd composed the hymn The Call of Wisdom especially for the occasion , which was performed by the 40-member children's choir Diamond Choir . Rowan Williams , Archbishop of Canterbury , dedicated his sermon to the Queen and thanked the Queen for her lifelong commitment. The Queen then went to an official reception at the Mansion House while other family members attended a similar event at the Guildhall . In an open carriage, accompanied by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment , the Queen then returned to Buckingham Palace; Hundreds of thousands of people lined the route. The conclusion was another air show (including the last airworthy Lancaster bombers ) when the royal family gathered on the palace balcony to present themselves to the crowd again.

Australia

In Australia , the celebrations were essentially limited to taking part in the activities in Great Britain. Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall were received on a state visit from November 5th to 10th. They traveled through Queensland , Victoria South Australia , New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory . Charles and Camilla took part in various cultural events and met with the local population. They were also present at the Melbourne Cup .

On February 6, the day of the accession to the throne, the Diamond Jubilee Week began in Canada . The Royal Standard for Canada was hoisted in Ottawa on Rideau Hall , on Parliament Hill , as well as on all residences of the lieutenant governors and on the parliament buildings of the provinces and territories. Elizabeth II had given permission to deviate from the usual flag protocol: This provides that the Royal Standard may only be hoisted where the Queen is personally. In the days that followed, 60,000 Canadians received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for Special Merit, 60 of them from Governor General David Johnston . The monarchy- critical association Citizens for a Canadian Republic criticized the government's spending on the anniversary celebrations was inadequate and more likely to come from the "personality cult dynasties of North Korea or Syria, not Canada." Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall traveled through the provinces of New Brunswick , Ontario and Saskatchewan from May 20-23 . They toured various cultural and social institutions, attended receptions, mingled with the population and inspected units of the Canadian armed forces.

New Zealand

New Zealand was the destination of a trip from Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall from November 10 to 16, 2012 . They traveled through Auckland , Wellington , Christchurch and Manawatu District . The visiting program focused on innovations in the fields of business, agriculture, volunteering, sport, children's education and animal welfare. Various commentators criticized the authorities' lack of interest in the festivities and complained that New Zealand had "missed an opportunity". The poor reporting in the news programs of the public broadcaster TVNZ also met with criticism .

On March 3, they were received in St. Kitts and Nevis by the Governor General, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.
