Sir Patrick Linton Allen , ON , GCMG , CD , KStJ (born February 7, 1951 in Portland , Jamaica ) has been the Governor General of Jamaica since February 26, 2009 . Following the independence of the state in 1962, he is the sixth holder of this office, succeeding Kenneth Hall . As Governor General he represents the British Queen Elizabeth II as head of state of Jamaica in ceremonial duties and appoints the ministers on behalf of Prime Minister Andrew Holness .

Life

Sir Patrick Linton Allen was born the fourth of five children of Ferdinand Allen and his wife Christina, née Grant, in the rural community of Fruitful Vale, Portland Parish. He attended school there and passed the GCE exam in 1968 after his private preparations . From the age of 17 he strengthened the teaching staff at his school. After two years, he enrolled at Moneague Teacher's College . After graduating, he taught at the Water Valley All-Age School in St. Mary. In 1976 he was appointed principal of Robins Bay Primary School in St. Mary, in 1978 he moved to the four times larger Hillside Primary School in St. Mary in the same position .

Allen belongs to the Seventh-day Adventist Church and wanted to pastor the Church as a teenager. In 1980 he began studying at Andrews University in Michigan, graduating with a bachelor's degree in history and religious studies and then with a master's degree in systematic theology. In 1986 he returned to Jamaica and ministered to various congregations in Spanish Town and May Pen . In 1989 he was formally ordained as a Seventh-day Adventist pastor .

He was then pastor of the largest Seventh-day Adventist Church in Central Jamaica in Spanish Town. He was also later appointed Director of Education and Communications for the Central Jamaica Church Association, then Director of Education and Family Life for Seventh-day Adventists in the West Indies in Mandeville .

In 1996 he returned to Andrews University, where he received his PhD in Education in 1998 . During this time he also worked at the university. Upon his return to Jamaica, he was elected President of the Seventh-day Adventist Congregation Association of Central Jamaica and was responsible for the congregations in St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Mary, and St. Ann. In 2000 he was elected President of the Seventh-day Adventist Union of West India, responsible for the churches in Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands . In 2005 he was confirmed in office.

He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Northern Caribbean University . He is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Andrews Memorial Hospital , Adventist Development and Relief Agency , Book and Nutrition Center Ltd. and the West Indies Union Investment Management Ltd. He oversees the Seventh-day Adventist administration educational institutions in Jamaica, including ten high schools, 22 primary schools, and numerous basic schools. He is also a member of the civilian oversight for the Jamaican police and was director of the state broadcasting company.

In 2006 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Distinction .

Patrick Allen has been married to Denise Patricia Beckford for 33 years and the couple have three children. One son and daughter live in Michigan and Atlanta in the United States , and one son lives in Jamaica.

His inauguration as governor general took place on February 26, 2009. On March 26, 2009, he was beaten by Elizabeth II to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and thus raised to the nobility .
