The Kensington Oval is one of the largest stadiums on the Caribbean island of Barbados . It is primarily used for cricket , but also for concerts and other events.

history

Cricket has been played here since 1882 when the Pickwick Cricket Club leased the land. The first international match took place in 1895 against an English amateur selection. The stadium has been used for test matches in the West Indies since 1930 , for the first time on a tour of the English team .

Furnishing

In the years 2005 to 2007, the stadium, which is located near Bridgetown , was completely modernized and rebuilt. The cost of this was BDS $ 90 million . Almost all grandstands and especially the media area have been renewed. The audience capacity of the Kensington Oval was increased from 12,500 to 28,000 seats.

Special features of the station are an oversized screen and a swimming pool from which spectators can watch the games. Behind the pool there is a grass mound that fans use for picnics. Below is part of the new media area.

The two ends are called Malcolm Marshall End and Joel Garner End .

Events

On April 28, 2007, the final of the Cricket World Cup 2007 between Australia and Sri Lanka took place in the Kensington Oval , after several games of the final round had already been played in the stadium. Several games and the final of the ICC World Twenty20 2010 between Australia and England also took place here.
