Saint Michael is an administrative unit ( Parish ) of the island state of Barbados . In 2008 it had an estimated 94,860 inhabitants on an area of 39 km² and is thus by far the most populous Parish of Barbados.
History and places
Bridgetown , the capital of Barbados, is located in Saint Michael , as is Deep Water Harbor , where most cruise ships dock. The sugar produced in Barbados is also loaded there.
The name Saint Michael comes from the church “St. Michael and All Angels ”, which was built in 1641 and has been the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Barbados since 1825.
Personalities
The cricketers Frank Worrell (1924-1967) and Everton Weekes (1925-2020), the writer, journalist and civil rights activist Austin Clarke (1934-2016) and the singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty (* 1988), better known by her stage name Rihanna, were born here. In honor of Rihanna there has been the so-called Rihanna Day in Saint Michael since 2008 , which is celebrated on February 21.
