David Johnston
David Lloyd Johnston , CC (born June 28, 1941 in Sudbury ) is a Canadian legal scholar and author. Johnston was the 28th Governor General of Canada from October 1, 2010 to October 1, 2017 . He was previously Rector of McGill University and President of the University of Waterloo .
biography
Johnston, the son of the owner of a housewares store, attended school in Sault St. Marie . He studied law at Harvard University and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts . While at Harvard, he was the captain of Harvard Crimson , the university's ice hockey team; twice he was accepted into the All-American team. He became friends with Erich Segal - the character Davey in Segal's bestselling novel Love Story is based on Johnston.
In 1965 Johnston graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor of Laws , and the following year from Queen's University in Kingston . In 1966 he began working as an assistant professor at Queen's University and two years later moved to the University of Toronto , where he became a full-time professor. From 1974 to 1979 he served as the Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Western Ontario . This was followed by the appointment as rector of McGill University in Montreal . After a fifteen-year tenure, he remained there as a law professor until the University of Waterloo appointed him its president in 1999. His scientific publications deal with financial market regulation , corporate law , public policy and the law in the field of information technology . Johnston is married and has five daughters.
On television, Johnston hosted various political debates, first before the 1979 general election in the debate between party leaders Pierre Trudeau , Joe Clark and Ed Broadbent . Five years later, he led the debate between Brian Mulroney , John Turner and Ed Broadbent ahead of the 1984 general election . In 1987 he led the debate between David Peterson , Bob Rae and Larry Grossman before the Ontario provincial election . From the late 1980s, Johnston headed several commissions on behalf of federal and provincial governments, primarily in the area of information technology. He has also served on the boards of several companies, including Fairfax Financial , CGI , Spar Aerospace , Seagram and Canada Trust .
On July 8, 2010, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Queen Elizabeth II had accepted his proposal to appoint Johnston Governor General. On October 1, 2010, he succeeded Michaëlle Jean .
