Ray Hnatyshyn

Ray Hnatyshyn , PC , CC (real name Ramon John Hnatyshyn ; born March 16, 1934 in Saskatoon , † December 18, 2002 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian politician and the 24th Governor General of Canada from 1990 to 1995 .

Career

Hnatyshyn was born in Saskatoon on March 16, 1934, the son of John Hnatyshyn , a Canadian senator and descendant of Ukrainian immigrants. First he attended the Victoria Public School and then the Nutana Collegiate Institute; After high school graduation, he eventually studied at the University of Saskatchewan , where he in 1954 and 1956 graduated and so the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws acquired.

Hnatyshyn married Karen Gerda Nygaard Andreasen on February 9, 1960, with whom he had two sons.

In 1974 Hnatyshyn then stood in the 1974 general election for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and got a seat in the lower house for Saskatoon-Biggar. On June 4, 1979 he became a member of the Privy Council . On December 14, 1989 it was announced that Elizabeth II had received the recommendation to appoint Hnatyshyn as the new governor general. He was officially sworn in on January 29, 1990. He served as governor general for five years and then continued to work as a lawyer.

In 2002 Hnatyshyn was appointed Chancellor of Carleton University , where he remained until his death.

Hnatyshyn has held various titles in the course of his political career . From June 4, 1979, when he was admitted to the Privy Council, his name was The Honorable Ramon Hnatyshyn (dt. About The Venerable ). When he was sworn in as Governor General in January 1990, First Comrade in the Order of Canada , the highest Canadian honor for civilians, and Commander in Chief of Canada. Thus he got the title His Excellency The Right Honorable . From the time he was recalled as Commander in Chief until his death, he only had the suffix The Right Honorable .
