Aeternus is a Norwegian metal band from Bergen . The music contains stylistic features of death and black metal, the band itself describes their style as dark metal .

Band history

Ares founded Aeternus in 1993 together with Erik Vrolok. In 1994 the only demo Walk My Path was created . Ares played all the instruments except for the drums. From 1994 to 1997 Ares played with Gorgoroth and from 1996 to 1998 Vrolok .

In 1995 the EP Dark Sorcery was released . Until 1996 a stable line-up could not be found, it was not until 1996 that Morrigan (ex- Obtained Enslavement ) joined a permanent keyboardist and bassist. Around this time the members of Aeturnus signed a contract with Hammerheart Records . In 1997 the debut Beyond the Wandering Moon was released , which received good reviews. While the first albums were still influenced by Black Metal , in 1999 Shadows of the Old turned to Death Metal. The tour took place with Red Harvest in the opening act for Mayhem .

The debut album Beyond the Wandering Moon was released in 1997. A tour with Emperor and Limbonic Art followed. 1998 followed … And So the Night Became . The subsequent tour took place in the opening act of Deicide . In 1999, Radek was joined by a second guitarist.

Morrigan left in 2001 and the band continued as a trio. Ascension of Terror was released that same year. In 2003 the band signed on the Nocturnal Art Productions label from Emperor member Samoth and released A Darker Monument there . In 2006 S. Winter replaced Vrolok on drums. With him the album Hexaeon was created . Winter got out again in 2007. His replacement was Terris.

In 2013 the album ... and the Seventh His Soul Detesteth was released , the first album that was no longer recorded by Pytten in the Grieghalle studio.

style

The band's style is considered difficult to access. At the beginning the band was strongly influenced by Black Metal, with singer Ares doing without high screams and using deep growls like in Death Metal from the beginning. In addition to blastbeats and double-bass-dominated riffs, the music consisted mainly of slow passages. The dark, monotonous sound of the electric guitars was typical. The drumming on Beyond the Wandering Moon , which is rather untypical for Black Metal, contains many variations and fills. Occasionally folk- influenced melodies were used. Acoustic breaks were also used on the first two albums, such as on Immortal's Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism or Dissections Storm of the Light's Bane .

From the third album, Shadows of Old , the death metal influences became more dominant and completely replaced the black metal elements from Hexaeon on. The band has been playing traditional Death Metal since then, which is based on the style of the early 90s, but is also influenced by Thrash and Viking Metal. The newer albums were received rather mixed by critics, so Hexaeon shows "playful limitations" and "songwriting deficits". The successor was better received, Jonathan Jancsary from Metalnews.de wrote about ... and the Seventh His Soul Detesteth that "the guys know how to write songs that have a reasonable amount of suspense". Despite the rather slow pace, the album shows aggressiveness and "heavyness".
